Saturday was slow again.
Said hi to Trucky on the way in, met up with fishonfishoff, and didnt bring much over the rail all day.
Rich caught I think 3 mangos, and some short grouper. I caught a couple of shorties (biggest 18"), and we both got rocked up a few times. Had a whole mackeral soaking on the bottom for a while when something took it and headed back under the pier. It finally let go and just the mack head was left on the hook. No idea what it was.
Couldnt freeline live baits effectively cuz the water just wasnt moving enough, and the wind didnt help matters any, so we bottom fished most of the day.
Someone near the end of the pier caught a big grouper early in the afternoon, and the guy was yelling for a net or gaff....I looked over the edge towards the end and saw a big splash and knew what it was. A crowd was gathered around the guy so we headed down there. When we got there he had a goliath about 150+ pounds on the surface, and they had one gaff hook in the fish's face and were getting ready to throw a 2nd when we told them to stop and they cant because it was a protected fish and they couldnt land it. There was probably 15 people down there and none of them had a clue. The guy says "Well what am I supposed to do then?" so we told him he had to remove the hook or cut the line. He wasnt happy but mention of the fine involved on harvesting illegally and he finally accepted the inevitable and they managed to release it. Ill post a pic of the fish if I can get Rich to re-send it to me.
If we hadnt gone down there, theres no doubt in my mind that they would have brought it over the rail and took it home.
Didnt see any Tarpon all day.
