Met up with SkyJay and Goindeep around 2:30 in the alley. Lane, small Mangos, and assorted junk fish in the mix. J managed to pull a keeper Mango out of the pile. Guest appearance by dive2cfish around somethin 30. Macks all around, many small groups (red and gag) pulled in by all. Left around 6:30pm. Didn't feel like weathering the storm coming asap. Not sure how they did after I left...Stay tuned...................CYA on the weekend Wayne and Co., hopefully. Work may get in the way. We'll C

Welp I didnt manage a grouper bite today but did get 3 macks and a few short snapper (whered those Lanes come from anyway?!). Put a couple macks on the bottom for tarpon but flipper had other plans. Greedy bastage. Jay hooked what was maybe a goliath early in the day and lost a couple of grouper to flipper in the early evening. Looked for Pier Rat stickers throughout the day, didnt see any. Eaglesfan I guess you headed out a bit before we got there. We weathered the storm that rolled in at about 8:00, and tried one more time after it passed with no luck. It was just one of those days. Packed it up and headed out about 9:00pm. Also got a nasty bird nest on my first cast with the conventional early in the day. So much for all that practice lol. Overall a nice relaxing day, learned a few new things, and the weather was great until the storm. Thanks Jay, it was fun trying, we will get em next time

Got to the SSP about 4pm and setup on the 4 th pile from the end. Tried cut greenbacks had a couple nice strikes but missed them they felt like a snapper. Sent out a big pinfish around 7and it was inhaled right when it reached the rockpile by a 20 inch grouper, little fella put up a good fight. My brother was fishing the 3rd pile freelining pinfish and got rocked 3 times by some big grouper, he said 2 of them burnt his thumb they hit it so hard, he also pulled in a short around 18 at around 6pm. Storm swelled up at 8 and that was it time to go.

Hi, I was wondering do you guys just cast off REALLY far to get the distance to the pilings? or use the balloon rig method?
Thanks, I'm dying to catch my first grouper!

poison, you can hit the beginning of the rockpiles with a good cast, but to get way out there you can use a balloon rig or freeline live bait (pinfish seem to stay alive the longest and work hard for you). Oh, and welcome to the forum!
rayswin, you werent far from us. We were somewhere is the 150s until about 5:00 or so, then tried a few spots closer to shore before we left. Glad to hear someone else got some grouper bites .

Jay, thanks for the cobia steaks (and grouper). Grilled em up today. Me and the girlfriend agree, cobia are our new favorite fish to eat.
Just fantastic taste and texture. I hit em with some lemon juice while the grill was heatin up, then added some everglades heat seasoning and on they went. Brushed with a bit-o-butter on the grill. WOW.

Tyler
I've heard of people frying it, but I think the meat is better suited as steaks. Its white, very firm, and mild with no fishy taste at all and it holds together great on the grill. Of course when I catch my first, I'm gonna cook it several ways (grilled, broiled, baked, fried, and possibly chowder or stew)
I rank it up there with swordfish as far as my favorites go. Brushing it with butter really brought out a richness in the flavor. Now that I know how it tastes, I want to get one even more than I did before. Lol

Heres another storm pic I took at the pier Tuesday. Like the last storm pic I posted, its actually 2 pics spliced together, so you can probably see the seam, but I like the wide panoramic view it gives.

Heres a pic I took after the storm rolled through, but it was still raining with lightning popping off every few seconds. The pier was desolate, except for one die-hard who was crazy enough to get out in it and keep fishin. SkyJay in the rain: That man lives to fish
