if its a really big fish i usually don't, and its not to big of a problem, espically if you're fishing deep water on a boat. only because you'll let the line back down the same depth anyways. but when ever you catch a fish the same fighting technique is applied, pull up reel down. so self level wind on the way down if you can. if not then you may not be fighting the fish and just horsing him in.

Hey fester,
I want make sure I understand correctly. I think that you are talking about guiding your line back onto the reel evenly when you have a big fish on that's taking drag. First of all, when the fish is taking drag you just hang on and don't try to reel. Keep your hand out of the way. Sometimes when you are reeling and guiding the line back on, the fish starts ripping drag and it's hard to get your hand out of the way in time. If that's what you are talking about a golf glove or batting glove on your left hand or a good lightweight leather glove helps out a lot. That's what I use when I fish for sharks and they can do a number on your hand /fingers without a glove. Call me a sissy if you like but that's what I do. I put the glove on while the clicker is going. Don't wear it all of the time 'cause it's too hot.

I use a product called Flex Wrap from Izorline. A wrap on your thumb and forefinger does the job. A roll lasts a long time and only costs about $2.50.

Unless your talkin true burners like Very Large Sharks or Kings, and Tarpon, retrieving the braid evenly on a conventional spool, is really a non issue. We been fishin 100 lb super braid for years now on the Grouper at the Skyway without a problem. Might take a little gettin used to, but knowin You, it ain't nothing You can't handle Fester. Good luck to You and Yer Uncle Tuesday... Wish I could join Ya's but duty calls Bro. Fish On.
(If you can get in there at about #8, been some fat Blacks holin up in them rocks NSP) X-Large Pinfish! (Don't have to freeline em out too far... Just the other side of where nobody can cast... if You have elbow room use it... walk it up and down as much as you can to get bit) Hope ya slay em
