Headed out to SSP At 6:30 am. Stopped at the rocks at the entrance on a hunch. Put on a popping plug and worked the grass. First cast, a 12" trout. Sent him back home to get momma. Next cast, 18" keeper. played around a while longer, 16"keeper. Sun came up and that was that. Set up shop in the alley. Threadies were thick. Sent some to the bottom, not much going on. Tide was non existant. Got a 20" short around 9:30. Tide started moving a little bit around 11. Jumped first poon. Put another threadie on, hit again. Poon #2. Met up with Skyjay, started to Mango fish. Got hit by the "What the F### was that?" Popped 60# Mamoi like it was 10# test. 12:30, 3rd Poon on. Gotta love em. Shortly after popped again by "What the f###." Managed limit of Mangos. Just got done with dinner. I made a white wine, butter, caper, basil, garlic reduction, saute'd filets. Yum. See ya on Sunday.

Great report Chris. Good to hear about the poons.
My gf got hit by the same 'what the ####' fish while I was nappin in the van Sunday. Popped my 50# power pro the same way.
And that recipe sounds great. Reminds me of my sous chef days.

Nice report Chris, and nice to meet you by the way. Would like to have stayed longer, but 8 hours is about the ole Lady's limit, especially in the heat. Sounds like a great dinner, ya had there. Glad to hear you got to play with Megalops. He's my favorite to. Fish On... J P.S. We had a couple visits from WTF Fish to. Seemed to be swimmin awful hard and fast for a Mudfish. Seen a couple Giant Wolfies (Barracuda) terrorizing the LadyFish before Daylight. Ya reckon? I don't know, but whatever it is ain't playin. That was the reason I was riggin up the pole with the 100 on it when you stopped by. To no avail though... A swing and a miss on that one, to. Possibly a big ole BlackTip? Who knows?

Megalops, yeah, that's what it was. Seriously though, I was thinking possibly a large shark? In all the years I have been going to the piers, I have never felt anything with the speed and power this thing had. (I've caught large tuna and Marlin). It hit me a total of three times. Same result each time. It did not head to the pilings but to open water. If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them.

Hey Mario, no actually I was not there for that one but saw the pics. I"m not leaning toward shark cause the water is super clear and never saw a thing. Plus I don't think a shark that big would mess with a Threadie on the bottom. But you never know.

I think the shark theory is a good one. Maybe he's takin the bait inside his mouth and swimming off, leaving the line to scrape against his teeth as he bolts?
Was talkin to the gf bout it last nite, and were thinkin heavy steel leader may be the way to get a look at what it is.
Maybe the bay has its own version of Nessie. Lol

All this talk has got me wanting to only target giant sharks when i get to fish the skyway again. To bad my penn 12/0 isent working right. I am not really sure whats wrong with it. About 6 yrears after i havent used i started playing with the reel and it dident seem to work. I think i was trying to get to florida and use it i was pissed off. I bought the rod and reel from a guy who thought it was a 9/0. A friend of mine who i worked for in a little bait shop right across the street from redington pier called me and told me somebody was trying to sell it him. I got for $75.00 and used the heck out of it.

Eyewitnesses describe it as a turtle-like ambush predator. quote from the article that goindeep posted. While on the queen fleet all day trip i did hook any a hige sea turtle and got aboout 15 feet from the boat but there was not fast swimming from it. It was lmore like fight a slow moving snag.
