Hey Tuna
I might see ya out there Thursday. The plan is to check out Ft DeSoto for a bit (never fished there before) then head to the SSP even though the tides dont look too good. Ill be on the lookout for ya if I go. Ive got a 4 day weekend starting Thursday so Ill definitely be out there at some point.

Interestingly enough, and like Chris was saying the Mystery of the whole deal was they were eating Threadfins, and not giant ones either??? One second nothing, next ZTT ZTT ZTT POW! I was getting bit under the pier, and they were heading for Ft Myers, In a Hurry! Never seen anything like it. I kept beefing up the tackle with the same results. Not a King, Not a Tarpon, I'm pretty sure of that. That's what I was sayin... Maybe a Big Cuda, Or Black Tip on the Haul Ass, I don't know. Good luck to the next person who sticks one, that's all I can say.

You might wanna tie yourself to the rail, just in case!!! I love it....a tale of a mysterious monster fish lurking around the pier, breaking off the most seasoned of pier anglers, leaving them scratching their collective heads. ...and the legend grows....

Heading out friday afternoon/evening to see what we can find. I think my wife will opt for being tied to the rail. She screems when anything she catches that takes drag

After being in Dunnellon on a job for the last two months, I am really itchin for some fishin. If all H dont' break out before Friday afternoon, I should be on the SSP Friday afternoon till some time Saturday. Got no blisters on my feet and my freezer aint full of meat, looks like I will be walkin that Skyway Mile. Come join the fun, still got my F-150 4x4 with the Pier Rat Decal on the rear window. Stop by, this old man still could learn a trick or two.

From the sound of it, it would be worth it to catch the USO just to get at the bounty of hooks and swivels in his mouth

If the old back could still handle it, I would break out the 9/0 with the 200lb test and see if I could get a look see. Then the Doctor would truly be the benefactor to that stupid move. Keep me posted, this mystery fish has me wondering. Kind of cool too.

For now the U S O is alive and well. How many people with pitch forks can we get to go after it. I am trying to plan a trip to the area for early aug. with the family. The cheapest flight for all of us i can find right now is about $900.00 i know its not bad for 4 round trip tickets plus the $120.00 in luggage fees. With me not working much overtime this year it will be tough.

Well, A great day it was... got there about 5:45am made the big mistake of handing the kids sabiki rods, before I had the main rods setup and waiting for bait. All I heard for the first half hour was "Dad I have fish you need to take off" I couldn't get five minutes to set up the rods for all these baitfish. Greenbacks were pleantiful on the sabiki, didn't get any on the cast net (need to practice with the bigger net) they were pretty good size (5-7"). Actually had too many bait for my 5gal bucket aerator. bait was dying too fast (not a big deal, since we fished with cut bait most of the day). Also caught a few blue runners and a few lane snappers.
Grouper was real good today we caught somewhere around 30 but all were short, couldn't buy a keeper. But a 18-20" grouper on 20# stealth braid on a medium/light rod makes for some exciting fishing!!! Was rocked probably 6-7 times there is where my keepers were. It's just hard to keep the rod in hand all the time, when your also tending to 4 kids.
Was fishing under the pier with cut threads, looking for a snapper bite and got nothing... not even one??? Beats me
Anyway great day fishing, nothing coming home but a van full of happy kids who had a great day fishing!! That's what keeps dad happy!!

Glad you had a good day..anything with Happy Kids fishing is whats its all about. I think you gotta beef it up a little on the tackle and bigger baits to get that keeper.

Nice report L4T, especially considering how the tides were looking. Catching shorts is alot more fun than catching nada.

HTF, I have 4-5 rods with 20lb on for fishing under the pier, then I have 3-4 rods with 40lb on for fishing the rock piles. All have appropriate flouro leaders on them. The one thing that kinda freaks me out, is when I get rocked I'm fairly OK with breaking my line with 20lb on it, but when it comes to the 40lb or larger, I get these flashes of laying on the ground with a 4-5oz lead buried in my forehead. It takes alot more to break those larger lines. P.S. I'm not one of those guys out there fishing with 7-10 rods. That's not where I was going with that.

LIL trick to that.. Put the sinker on the main line and use a leader stronger then the main line.. Line pops.. Sinker goes to bottom.. not to your head..

L4T, Are you using braid ( no stretch )? You shouldn't have that problem if just your leader is mono or flouro.

HTF... On my smaller rigs I do have #20 Braid w/flouro leader. I'll be honest on my larger rigs, I'm using #40 Mono w/flouro leader, so yes there definitely is stretch there. Point well taken, i'll have to work on getting braid on my larger setups.
