i have heard of people attempting this method people not neccesarly getting broke off on pilings there also getting broke off trying to reel in the line and raising their rod tips and fraying all the line on the underneath of the EAST SPAN not a good idea

Jay, You can guess what I think about it. Too bad the boaters can't have exclusive rights to the east span. As far as people getting cut off. I am sure that some are but will get better at it after a while.

Well, although I haven't tried any flotation devices yet, I have been freelining under the East span and catching Grouper. I use an 8' very heavy action rod and hold my tip down and keep my spool open. I saw Scooter doing this with success and I went to school on him as I have done many times and as usual with great success. If this is wrong, then so be it. I will fish where the fish are. I agree that leaving floating line is a hazard, but that I am not doing. My opinion for what's it worth.

Well out past, in the rocks on the other side. You do run the risk of getting cut off by boaters though. Wonder if that was why the floating line were out there, hmm?

Old post 11/29/08 at 12:38 PM Reply #1 My bothers and I took the boat out yesterday to fish the East side of the SSP, thinking there wouldn't be all of those lines in the water to worry about since it's closed now. We found multiple bobbers floating there, attached to long strands of fishing line with live pinfish on hooks underneath. Looks like people are floating them out from the West side and they are getting cut loose on the pilings. This creates a mess for sea birds, turtles, dolphins and passing boats. We picked up what we saw and disposed of it. Please spread the word to try & get people to stop doing this.
