haha ! Man I don’t even know where to begin !! After 19 hours on the pier I am just fried.
Headed to sspier straight from work got there around 2am.. caught a few baits and drifted them around with no luck for awhile. Around 4am took a nap. Started again around 6am. It was flat calm and cold. No activity at all til the sun burnt off the clouds around 9am. I got a big hit on a greenback under a float, cut off. Big schools of Bonita showed up at the middle of the pier around 930. I threw spoons at them with no luck, they were moving fast and only made one pass. Tried to float out another greenback and was met with a smaller gag grouper. The water was crystal clear with slow moving water. Certain spots you could see straight down to the bottom.
After a while of no action I decided to check out the end and noticed right away people hooking up with Bonita on live bait. My bubblers had died and I no longer had live bait but I stuck around the crowd for a while and saw many Bonita come over the rail averaging in the 8lb range with a couple especially large ones. Mack’s of all sizes and blue runners mixed in. I threw gotchas and yozuris, had many follows, and one hit from a Bonita but didn’t hook up. Many people were catching many fish but it was very crowded. Incredible action down there from 12-2pm but I did not land a single fish. I was frustrated and decided I could find them somewhere else and moved to the beginning of the pier.
Wind picked up, spoon conditions got better. First cast by the first bathroom and I got whacked by a huge mack. Somewhere in that 24-25in range. Followed by a few more over 20, and then an hour and a half of nonstop bites of macks ranging in all sizes. I threw back a couple smaller ones and missed a couple but was definitely close to my limit, met up with inoeatfish who saved my ass with some ice and we got on some more ! Fished with some fellow buddies and had a great time. Got a juvi king and scattered makes but as tide slowed and switched bite died down.
Last bite of the day for me was a insane bite.. battled something heavy for a while on a 3000 size reel with 20lb leader and 12lb braid… almost got wrapped in pilings but managed to pull in a big ole gag with help from all my new friends ! tiny bait with a tiny set up hahaha
Thanks y’all for another great day at the skyway !!

I saw you managing the gag grouper and took my net out to help you. I am impress that you managed to control the grouper without snapping your line or your leader. What brand of braid line and leader you use?

I like telling the story without the pictures so that no one believes me and they don’t go to the piers 😂
The fishing reports are very enjoyable in my opinion and the reason I use this site !

What brand of braid line and leader you use? My good friend ! I could not have landed that fish without your help so thanks again! That was probably my lightest set up, 3000 size okuma ceymar reel, medium fast ugly stick… 3.99$ for 500 yards 12lb braid off temu, with 20lb leader. All you guys saying you need an 8000 size reel and 80lb braid to pull up a 28in gag are full of it 😂

What brand of braid line and leader you use? What was your name again my friend? I met many people out there, and with my lack of sleep and brain fried from the sun I butchered many many names, my apologies to anyone I met out there yesterday who’s name I butchered.

Thanks for stuckintherocks for letting me use his gear to fish. I literally drive an hour to get there with just a bucket of ice. I snuck out of work and didn’t tell my wife where I went. No evidence. Even gave all my Mac’s away and took a shower at my brother’s place.
Also thanks to nakamura for giving us his long shank hooks. I’ll give you some other ones next time I see you.
Also thanks to some random Asian guy for letting us use all his bait!!! But he walk away with a ton of free Mac’s. Probably best trade of his life.
Here is the kicker. Tide chart showing incoming all day. But I didn’t believe stuckintherocks when he said it’s outgoing till i saw it myself.
I got there at 4:30 trying to get past that dreadful 275 highway. I actually was suppose to go 75 but I forgot I was going to the south side. First two cast and hook up with two small macs. Notice “angry Malaysian man”, nickname for this old Asian man given to him by the local pier rats because he will curse and yell at you if you fish within 10 yards of him, was hooking up Mac’s left and right every cast. I didn’t even see him had any cut offs using live bait. He out fished us 10:1. Decided spooning was only getting intermediate action and smaller Mac’s while angry Malaysian man was hand pulling insanely huge Mac’s up. I’m talking he is getting nothing but monster Mac’s off live bait. 5:30pm and I decided to borrow a cast net to look for bait but found them to be too deep. I ran into an Asian guy who just was given fresh greenbacks and I told him let’s hook up as I got a live welll pump.
Ran back to the spot but notice angry Malaysian man had left his spot. That’s not a good sign. We did proceed to hook up the bigger macs but once the tide slow down and switch at 6:30 to incoming. And after stuckintherocks hooked up with that big ass gag. Nothing ate and we try to move twice looking for them but with no luck.
When you see guys throw 24” macs over the rail, that’s awesome! But when you see angry Malaysian man handpulll the Mac’s up, those are MONSTERS!

Remember how I kept saying “let’s go to the shed !! “ apparently that’s where angry Malaysian ended up and kept slaying with others ! No biggie for me because I had already had plenty of action but I sure do wish you guys were there when there was more big Macks coming thru than a local McDonald’s! I’m gonna hopefully be back out there Wednesday afternooon, can’t do the overnight sesh again hahaha
