Hi all! My boys and I were going to make a weekend trip to set up a few trolleys for Kingfish and Tarpon (mainly kingfish)off Skyway North on from May 24-27. I've heard that kings like water temps of around 78, and was wondering if this is a good time to wet some lines. I've also heard that skyway can get pretty busy, and was wondering how crowded the weekdays are. Thanks!

Go early and get ready for a long day. Skyway misfits Facebook page seems to be able to give you more updates on their king fishing. Find big blue runners or Spanish sardines and Good luck! The people out there are friendly and seem to have an open community to be helpful.

Late May is very late for kings anywhere around Tampa Bay. By that time the majority of them have already passed by and have migrated to the northern Gulf. For tarpon, the full moon in late May or first week in June can be the peak time. Check this year's astrological calendar. However, I have not heard of trolley rigs being effective for tarpon, but maybe others have. If you want hot action with tarpon at that time, I strongly suggest that you instead go to the Keys and fish the bridges. You will be awed by all the tarpon you see, even if you just get a lot of brief hook-ups. If you do go, absolutely be sure to go see and hand-feed the hundreds of tarpon under the docks at Robbie's marina in the upper Keys.

We really like the area and still plan on coming down around then. Do people still target kings around then, or are they mostly out of season?

I don’t think there will be any kings around but anything is possible I suppose.. i have seen tarpon hit trolly rig once or twice but there’s much more effective and efficient ways to fish for them if you ask me. Trolly rig also likely to get hit by cuda shark or dolphin but if you’re just looking for a screaming drag to excite some kids then I suppose that’s fine too.

I’ve had grouper come up and eat my bait on a trolley rig lol.

What kind of rigs do they usually use for tarpon?

I don't mess with Tarpon, they have kicked my butt too many times. When I did I sight fished for them on some bridges at night. Just watch the shadow line below, they stack up pointed into the current. Flip a free lined pinfish or sardine out and let the current bring it back and be ready to get schooled

^^ yup shotgun said it best. Only tip I have to add is there is zero chance of landing a larger tarpon and safely removing the hook so if you’re gonna fish for them a best practice is to crush the barbs on your circle hooks and if I’m solely targeting tarpon it’s nice to use the cheap silver eagle claw hooks, still crush the barb but if you still hook the fish very well and it doesn’t shake the hook out you can lock down drag and usually the hook will bend before the line will break assuming you’re using a heavy enough set up

The other day I just saw a nice sized gag caught on a white bait under a popping cork that was out for a mack hahaha

They are very good at unhooking themselves

They are very good at unhooking themselves Very true, but an extra bit of insurance never hurts
