FISHED THIS MORNING WITH MY NEPHEW UNDER THE RINGLING BRIDGE IN SARASOTA. MOSTLY SMALL GROUPERS AND SNAPPERS ON SHRIMP. I HOOKED SOMETHING AND WAS FIGHTING IT IN. GOT A GLIMPSE OF IT AND SAID IT'S A FLOUNDER. AS I PULLED IT OUT OF THE WATER I REALIZED IT WASN'T A FLOUNDER. SOMETHING I NEVER CAUGHT OR EVEN SAW BEFORE. HE LOOKED IT UP ON HIS PHONE AND TURNS OUT IT WAS A WHITE SPOTTED FILEFISH. ABOUT 16 INCHES LONG AND IT'S SKIN FELT LIKE 80 GRIT SANDPAPER. DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AT HOME ONLINE AND FOUND OUT THEY CAN TURN DIFFERENT COLORS. THIS ONE WAS MOSTLY YELLOW WHEN IT BROKE THE SURFACE. IF I HAD A SMARTPHONE I WOULD POST SOME PICS. PROBABLY ONCE IN A LIFETIME FISH. SAID THEY DO GOOD IN AN AQUARIUM AND FOUND ONE ONLINE FOR SALE FOR 350 BUCKS. CRAZY.

Never seen one before, web says they range along the coast of florida southward to the Caribbean. are omnivorous eating sponges, coral and whatever they find.Nice catch.

I caught one a couple of years ago on SSP. It was about 18" and had never seen one before or since. It fought like a bag of wet socks! LOL

Filefish are very common in South Florida, particularly in the Miami area around bridge pilings. Some, mainly Cubans catch them with lift nets that they manuever under the filefish that are eating barnacles from the pilings. The filefish are highly regarded as food fish, and are said to taste like lobster. Given their main diet of barnacles, that seems reasonable.

tons of yellow filefish at skyway but I guess the color is completely different than the white spot filefish you got down there.

LOOKED UP YELLOW FILEFISH ONLINE AND THIS DEFINITELY WAS NOT ONE OF THEM. I SAW COLOR VARIATIONS IN THE WHITESPOTTED FILEFISH AND SOME WERE MOSTLY A PALE YELLOW LIKE THIS ONE. NOT REALLY ANY SPOTS IN SPITE OF THE NAME. FILEFISH NAME COMES FROM THE ABRASIVE SKIN. SAW A GUITARFISH OFF A PIER ONCE NEAR BOCA GRANDE. ABOUT THREE FEET LONG. ANOTHER ODD FISH.

HAVE ONLY FISHED THERE A FEW TIMES. SAW A BIG TARPON SWIM BY THE SEAWALL ON THE BEACH END OF THE BRIDGE. QUITE A FEW SMALL GROUPER AND SMALL SNAPPERS AND A COUPLE JACKS. TIDE CHART SAID VERY HIGH TIDE FLOW AND TURNED OUT THERE WASN'T HARDLY ANY CURRENT AT ALL. FISHED WITH SHRIMP AND A THREW A BOMBER FOR A BIT. NOT THE HART'S LANDING SIDE. SEEMS LIKE A GOOD SPOT WITH ENOUGH WATER FOR SOME BIGGER FISH IF A GUY COULD HIT IT RIGHT.

I agree with everything you said, looks to be good spot but typically underwhelming results.
The Spanish dont even really get back there until they have been in for awhile. Better off driving an extra 5min to a pass.
People shark fish at the end and also catch underwhelming small sized sharks. Nothing ever over 3-4ft

AFTER CONSIDERING WHAT WE CAUGHT THERE SATURDAY IN 5 HOURS I TOLD MY NEPHEW, 'THIS AIN'T THE SKYWAY PIER'. MAKING PLANS TO FISH ELSEWHERE.
