Hit ssp early Tuesday around 1am.. fished a couple hours in the shallows catching ladyfish and watching tarpon feed. Napped for a few hours and woke up to a peculiar sight.. Mack’s and Bonita launching out of the water and blowing up in large schools. I had literally just woke up and the school had moved on before I could get a rod out. But spent the day going up and down pier catching and missing macks jacks lizard fish hound fish ladyfish small trout and a Bonita on an assortment of spoons and jigs. Unfortunately the Bonita broke off when I tried to flip it up. Kept Mack’s for smoker and kept jacks and etc for future cut baits. The pier was full of life and I saw multiple anglers catching Mack’s jacks and bonita. As I was leaving I saw a gentleman struggling with a very large fish and making a commotion… as it turns out he has caught an approx 6 foot very large nurse shark and a giant cobia had followed it in and was just staying in the current with the shark ! He held the shark while I threw a pinfish at the cobia and it charged it and inhaled it!! I waited a second and went to set hook and the cobia had spit the pinfish… we proceeded to take turns holding the shark and throwing literally everything in our arsenal at this cobia and it would not eat anything else.. we tried every artificial and every bait that we had… attached are some pictures of the haul and a screenshot from a video I took of the cobia and the shark. I had caught a 48 inch cobia last year and this one was much larger. Probably around 5 foot maybe 40 or 50lbs. Really cool sight and one of the best days at skyway I’ve seen in a long time.

Very nice!! I've seen many cobia do that along the panhandle piers. Frustrating but also cool to watch a 30# fish cruising around making lots of fisherman mad.

You could have stayed home and slept and missed all that. Good for you getting out there. Nice job. Heard there's a "Bounty" out now on Cobia. Thinks it's 50 bucks and you keep the meat.

I’ve heard about that bounty on cobia the gentleman kept talking about splitting it… I just wanted one of those filets hahaha it was a beautiful fish. 3rd cobia I’ve seen over the past couple months at the piers. They seem to be making a reappearance. I’ve also seen and heard of some big gags being caught off the pier this year

Would of been a great time to have a bow and fishing arrow or even a big heavy gig.

Believe it or not but it's legal to shoot Cobia with a fishing bow. It's one of 2 fish that can be taken with a bow, Sheepshead is the other. A legal size Cobia will make you sorry you shot it....forgot, Mullet is another

Bow is legal, gig is legal, cast net is legal, however, I imagine a Cobia would blow a hole in a net

Not sure but I believe spearfishers are required to stay 100yds away from bridges, piers, and shorelines for their own protection. Since bowfishing is done above the surface those rules don't apply

A FEW TIMES HERE IN ENGLEWOOD I'VE SEEN GUYS WITH FISHING BOWS ON THESE PIERS. JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO AS I WAS LEAVING A GUY WAS GETTING OUT HIS BOW AS HE HAD SPOTTED SOME BIG SHEEPSHEAD OFF THE PIER. GUESS I'D RATHER USE HOOK AND LINE.
