Mac bite was crazy today . Had a appointment at 2 so decided to hit the pier at 6. Around 7 caught 4 18 inch and around 12 the bite got hot again for about 20 minutes. Largest caught was about 22" by somebody else. Ran out of spoons as they were really aggressive when they appeared and all almost in the 17"+ range so a few got away. All in all great day for spanish

FYI, some mackerel around today at SSP. There were probably only about half a dozen guys fishing for mackerel, and the average catch was about half a dozen mackerel per fisherman. I got there a little late, about 1:45, thinking that the fishing would be best in the late afternoon. It turned out that most of the fish were caught about an hour earlier about the time that the tide was moving in the strongest. I caught only 4 mackerel, but lucked out with a nice bluefish and a very nice pompano -- all except one mackerel were caught on a spoon rig -- yes, the pompano too. As the tide slowed almost nobody caught any fish until just before the tide turned to going out around 5:30 PM. There was a huge amount of bait, with big schools of small (1.5 inch) scaled sardines (whitebait) on the surface with an occasional mackerel seen slashing through them or even jumping far out of the water. The first mackerel I caught spit out 3 of those small scaled sardines as I was unhooking it. Almost all fish caught by all fishermen were caught along the first half of the pier, with nothing happening out farther. The lady at the toll booth showed me a picture of a 28" gag that was caught in the morning.
