Went out for first time since early June to Ft. Desoto. To my surprise I discovered that the Bay pier has reopened! It was not supposed to reopen until this winter.
There were a few people there. Only saw small ladyfish and leather jackets being caught...one of the fishermen said small pompano were caught. I tried a spoon but no takers. Caught several pinfish and a spottail on sabikis tipped with bait.
Tide was confused...was supposed to be coming in but strong easterly winds appeared to make it outgoing. Water somewhat murky. Fished between 1030am and noon...went that late as it was a mostly cloudy day.

Does that ferry still dock there? They have stairway leading to the water. I think the ferry will load there. Ferry currently by the boat ramps. Not sure where the work boats will load unless they will use the same area.

That fish on channel dude fishes the wood pilings for snappers. Catches a bunch of undersized and just about 10-11" fish. Still good enough to eat.
I think if you could get silver dolllar size pinfish and test the deeper part of the pier near each of the pilings.might be able to produce some larger snapper and maybe a gag or two once the water is much cooler.

He catches Mojarra off the beaches before he goes there, Their not giant snappers but legal and eat good. Better than spending $100 in gas and another 30 on shrimp.

I dont think there is any land-based spot on the west coast that justifies spending 100 dollars on gas to drive to. Not even the skyway anymore. I only go to skyway for gags or kings, but live close so its justified in my eyes. Less than a quarter tank, there and back...plus then a pier fee each time and a toll charge.

I'm referring to hauling a boat to the bay, with gas for the boat and vehicle it adds up quick. yes you can catch them at the piers also, some are better than others at the piers, even without a boat I'm 70 miles from the pier.
