Yeah, saw some of it on tv, surprised it's as populated. 50 yrs ago that place was a wilderness, then the word got out about how good the fishing is just outside the river and folks moved in and became guides and others followed. Knew a guy whose family had a cabin on the river, the trout they caught there was hard to believe but I saw the pics, said they would catch all the select shrimp they needed in the river on the way out to massive grass flats...water is shallow there for a long way out

As of early October last year, Steinhatchee still had great fishing. My son and I encountered a young guy with a nice boat at the dock of our rental (Sunset Place -- great place) and he took us out 2 days to fish the grass flats. Caught trout after trout with most being about a half inch short of being keepers, but still brought in a nice box of trout, huge bluefish, and redfish. After he left, my so and I took our kayaks out and fished the mouth of the river and caught many redfish (kept our 2-man limit), lots of trout, most also just under limit size, but couple of keepers by casting white paddle tail jigs along the marshgrass shoreline. It was an amazingly productive and comfortable fishing experience given that it was just a few hours and easy paddle in the middle to late afternoon. Also, we caught almost 3 dozen blue crabs off of the resort pier one afternoon.
From the reports I have seen so far after Idalia, the storm surge was not nearly as high as predicted. It looks like any ground level buildings would have been totally flooded, but those up on pilings were not. I suspect that most will be repaired by next scallop season (when the town and everything is far to busy and booked for a good fishing trip).
Roy's restaurant, which is on ground level and closest along the river to the mouth (very good food), surely will have to be totally rebuilt.

Great story fishsci, me, I'd prefer to see forced buyouts, forced evictions, and complete removal of any and all manmade structures with no chance of future development in that area, Cedar Key as well. Those areas should be left wild
