Arrived at 7 and set up my rods. Around 8 I started throwing spoons and at 8:20 mack activity was hot. Caught 8 macks, 7 undersized and only 1 keepr 18". Lost 3 macks to a kingfish and had had 4 encounters with a kingfish on my spoons but I never fought a kingfish so no luck catching it. After 9 all mac activity died down .left at 2 . All this was during high tide before the last bathroom . If anyone can help on how I can land one with having to set up a trolley rig that info will be helpful. Tight lines anglers.

without a trolley rig you could try a balloon rig, plenty of posts been posted here about it. good luck.

Sounds like a great day. For kings, float a larger bait (live greenie or whitebait) out under a cork or balloon. Gotta have a wire leader. I use 27# single strand about 8" long.

On a rising tide almost high a trolley rig is the only way I know to hold a bait in the current. Balloon rig or freelining will just be swept back under the pier. On a falling tide freelining is the ticket according to Skyjay. Kingfish or king mackerel? Two different fish. Were you consuming some top grade "Sticky Icky" when that happened? Sounds sticky to me...lol

Need the right tide and right wind, working together for a balloon rig to work properly.

It's about that time of the year when the False Albacore make a run through the bay, maybe that's what you saw. I can't recall hearing King Mackerel in the bay this time of the season. If you aren't already pissed off at the dolphins set up a trolley rig and watch what they do

I got the half of its body as a souvenir lol

Cuda sounds more likely, a cuda was caught on the north pier recently..you do what you want, but I suggest you abandon the king mackerel quest. Dolphins will drive you nuts, but the boaters getting bait will destroy your rigs as well

I always used a single 2x #2 or #4 treble, but that was back in Alabama
Sounds like a barracuda to me. Especially Given current water temps.

Here's a thought for you Cman and something I plan to do in a couple months as I have watched it work. On a falling tide set up a rig with some guts, and freeline a big threadfin or scaled sardine out no more than 10yds off the pier, set your drag just tight enough for a big fish to take some line, set your clicker, stay close and sling your spoon around and see what happens. I've seen some 30" Kings and 30" Spanish caught with that method, of course treble hooks will be outlawed by then so it's j-hooks only but you can still make a stinger rig with those. I watched a guy catch a 38" Cobia with that technique

You can also use a "sliding swivel/twist swivel" with small balloon...slid down your line...that was placed out with a weight to hold bottom.
Using one rod only. Trolley system is 2 rods. On your mainline....tie heavy swivel near weight...tie weight on with lighter mono...so that if you catch weight on bottom...it will break and you can still land fish.
