The one time at the south pier I put a small piece of squid on each hook of my sabiki made all the difference in catching pinfish. The squid was just tough enough that I didn't have to rebait each time. Without the squid I couldn't hardly catch a pinfish. Probably not news to most of you.

I have caught a few pinfish on sabikis with no bait...when I didn't want them. Try using strips of threadfins, sardines, and even pinfish for a teaser, but be sure to leave the skin on. And say goodbye to the squid

We use tiny pieces of "Fish Bites". They are so tough you hardly have to rebait at all.

Ive seen days where pinfish attack sabikis with no bait like crazy. But most of the time you need to add a little bit of bait. I've had mixed results with FishBites and pinfish. Very good bait for whiting along the beaches. And spadefish when the eating size ones are around. And for pompano.

There's something about buying bait to catch bait that haunts me

There's something about buying bait to catch bait that haunts me So don't. A naked sabiki in any of the whitebait schools will eventually snag you at least ONE minnow of some variety. Cut that bait into some tiny bits and you're good. Or don't eat the last shrimp from a dinner and throw it in the fridge/freezer. Even cooked (which is normally inadvisable) tiny bits of shrimp will be enough to get you pinfish. Problem solved. What haunts me is when I buy a bucket of shrimp, then look in there and see these gorgeous 20/25 shrimps and just KNOW I should go home and eat them instead of sacrificing them for a bunch of craptier fish I won't be keeping. SIGH. And yes, I know you shouldn't eat bait shrimp. I'm just saying.

for what a couple dozen shrimp cost these days, I'm keeping them for a later fishing trip, you can tell if they are farm raised shrimp by looking at their tail,if its all chewed up its farm raised and the other shrimp have been eating the tails of the other ones and swimming around in those nasty ponds full of their poop.

Launch that sabiki out by a rock pile with no bait and jig, (make sure it’s a spot you know so you don’t get snagged) I get pins with no bait all the time. Also tons of micro squirrelfish or sand perch whatever the hell they’re called which make great snapper bait if you can keep ‘em alive

I know those small fish you are talking about. I am going to try them for snapper soon. Good idea. Thanks. Friends of Dolphins organization probably wouldn't like the idea of me reeling in a sabiki with a couple pinfish on it from the rockpiles. If a Dolphin got tangled up in one of those who knows what might happen.

You would be minus 1 sabiki and possibly throw over the rail by some 300lb Big Mac champion

If a Dolphin got tangled up in one of those who knows what might happen. They die pretty easily, need constant water changes to keep them alive for a couple hours, wouldn’t put them in a bucket with shrimp. Also like I have previously stated I use a shorten sabiki because it’s easier to control, less chance of snagging any unwanted animals. And you gotta always be conscious and aware of your surroundings. Not just mindlessly launching sabikis into the abyss
