Got to the pier at 5:30 sharp this morning to meet a couple out of town friends. Went to get bait (the bait lady's math was a bit wonky, but I think she means well) and then settled in close to there to fish. Tide, wind and current were all headed OUT this morning until it turned in at maybe... 10am? Didn't get any bites that weren't pinfish (they are in savage packs out there right now) until 1pm or so when a single depressed spanish mack suicided on my shrimp under popper rig that was halfway to the bridge on freeline. He was a nice one, 20" range. Only fish we decked today. Tried live, dead and cut greenies, pinfish, shrimp, even some squid. Threw a clark spoon a bit on both sides until I donated it to a rockpile.
Was a beauty of a day. Pier was lightly populated. Got a bit of sunburn on me since we just moved and I couldn't find my damn fishing shirts. SIGH. Found them as soon as I got home.
The bait is out there thick but they are smallish (maybe 2" long?), spooky and fast as heck. Good luck getting them with a net from the deck. They see that noise and are GONE. Had to sabiki up the ones we used today. Soon as I tied the sabiki on SIXTEEN PELICANS MYSTERIOUSLY DIED... but I got my bait.
