If everyone cares so much about saving the pier, all we would have to do is organize a meeting where we all fish off the east side at the same time, then notify the local news that there is going to be a protest. Whats the worst that could happen? You get asked to leave. You don't, then the cops come and place you in the squad car and escort you out. Big whup. Maybe you get a trespassing violation. ooooo scary. The more people who get put in cop cars for fishing off a concrete pier, the more publicity it will get, which will get us to the bottom of the BS real quick. Anyone want to see this "inspection" report? Think about it. We all just got screwed and are not doing anything MEANINGFUL about it. We paid for this damn pier with tax money and tolls. Now the government wants to tell us we cant walk on a concrete pier? ? The St Pete pier is being remodeled in 2012. There is 50 million or so set aside for that. WTF?!?!?!?

No problem. Just leave when the police ask you to, but at least they will be called out.
if the pier is a danger, why havent they put signs on it telling boaters to stay out from under it?

Screw the $500 fine. Refuse to pay. What can they do? Take you to jail? All for walking on the east side pier?
Cool. Just more flames for the public-awareness-raising publicity fire. I won't mind having that on my record. Big whup. I'd be proud of it.
I'd give anything to see 50 people courageous enough to fish the east side together, refuse to leave, then accept the trespassing ticket and peacefully allow the police to escort them out. Don't walk, don't move, don't stand. Make them physically lift you up into the car. It's called nonviolent, passive resistance and it's a right we all have.
Then you take the tickets for trespassing to the entrance of the pier where the camera crews are waiting. We all rip the tickets up, publicly refusing to pay them.
I say we do it this Friday night when it gets really crowded. We secretly spread the word to everyone there that at 9pm, we all move to the east side. Only 20 people who actively do this could convince most everyone to do it. Inform the local media of the protest.
If you think they won't jump at the chance to cover a story of a publicly coordinated protest and a refusal to pay fines, you're crazy.
Hell, I may just do this by myself even if no one else wants to...
