For the past week I have been trying to get someone with the right connections to get the Inspection reports on the Piers, but so far no luck, maybe Capt. Mel or Frank Seargent will come up with something in their articles, but I doubt it.. Pier Asscociates has a lot to loose in this deal and I would think their atty's are on it. Anyway, now I am trying to find out myself. So if anyone knows FDOT people it would help.
So far this is what I know:
1) They used to treat bridge reports as top secret stuff under the terrorism threat umbrella. Not anymore. The public has a right to know the saftey of their bridges. Not that a fishing pier should even be a concern.
2) Going to the FDOT website under Bridge information www.dot.state.fl.us/statemaintenanceoffice/CBR/BridgeInformation.shtm all the links are dead. New website so maybe nothing more than that.
3) Did find a document on Bridge Inspection Process www.dot.state.fl.us/statemaintenanceoffice/CBR/Bridge%20Inspection%20Process2.pdf so it should apply for the Piers. I noted that it takes an inspector and a liscensed engineer to sign off on the reports. I guess what I want to know is how long has this been in such bad shape and was it documented anywhere, especially to prompt an immediate closing.
4) Been reading some other Florida bridge issues with the FDOT and it is not uncommon for city's, counties etc..to question the reports. In one case they made them do core samples only to find out that the concrete was much thicker than they thought and therfore has a longer lifespan. So, the counties on both sides should be involved in this.
So nothing more will come of this without a real investigation. The key is those inspection reports and if the closing was warranted.
