Already received a positive response from one rep. Please write him asking him to please find funds to maintain the pier and keep the east side open. For our kids, our family, our grandkids and for our right to fish. First horward park now the pier next the beach. Just click on the link and follow the directions. Will take five minutes. Then post on this thread that you posted. Need 100 post by 5:00 pm sunday Rep. Done ..... this is what i sent .
To the Honorable Peter Nehr
I am writing to express my concern over the south side of the skyway fishing pier closing due to structural problems ..
the pier is a fantastic place for folk's to fish , as you probably know , it's a place where thousands of kids have been inspired to become lifelong sportsman , leading them over the years to spend tons of money in Florida.... on gear , boats and everything else under the sun related to the passion that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives .
if a "penny for pinellas" flew so easily (lol) cant we do "A penny for the pier" ?
i guess my thought is that Florida will lose a lot of tax revenue , not just from pier "Rats" but from the folk's who never catch that "bug" that so easily infects one from just one trip to the pier .
Seems a shame for Florida to lose it's claim of having the worlds longest fishing pier within its borders , surely something can be done !
If i can help you in any way please contact me , and thats not an empty offer .
respectfully
Dan MacMurray

This was sent this morning to Peter Nehr, the governor is next on my list.
I'm writing this letter to make you aware of an issue that is affecting many of the people you represent; the closing of a portion of the Skyway Fishing Piers. When I first heard of this news I was very disappointed to find out what was happening and then the more I read about it, that disappointment turned into anger. The Skyway fishing piers are a great place for people like myself who do not have the luxury of owning a boat to go and enjoy a great day of fishing. I have been taking my kids to the Skyway fishing piers about 1/week for the last few years and we have made lots of memories along the way; now someone wants to come along and take that all away from us. I think what troubles me the most is how this whole situation is being handled. If the east spans of the bridge had outlived their "usefulness" back in 2004 or so, why was nothing said then? Why wait until 4 years later and then make the information available to the public just 1 week before you are going to shut it down? Something smells funny here and it's not the bathrooms on the south fishing pier.
I can certainly understand that there are concerns that the older portion of the bridge is no longer safe and I do appreciate the fact that they appear to be concerned for the safety of the people who frequent the piers but instead of trying to find a way to keep the piers open, they are taking the easy way out and shutting half of it down. I don't know if you have ever been down to the skyway piers or not but if so then you will probably realize the logistics nightmare that this will create, especially on the weekends. The north side pier is generally packed on a weekend (especially the holidays) and that is with both spans open. I usually will take my kids to the south pier where there is more room and things are a little more spread out. Our favorite spot to fish is on the east span of the south side pier and this past weekend was probably the last time we will be able to fish that spot. Packing up that car yesterday was not an easy thing to do and my 12 year old daughter was nearly in tears because she knew that we would probably never fish in "our spot" again.
The Skyway piers are more than a place to fish; they are somewhat of a national landmark. I think you will be hard pressed to find another fishing pier as long as the south skyway pier; as a matter of fact the web site for the piers states they are the world’s longest fishing piers! Why are we giving up on the piers so easily? Why can't me at least make an effort to save the piers before we give up on them. What's next, we decide that we no longer want to preserve the Everglades because it's just big piece of swamp land being overrun by Burmese pythons? I can certainly understand that it will take quite a bit of money to make repairs to the east spans of the Skyway piers but can't we at least make an effort to raise the money before we throw in the towel? Can't we at least shore it up enough to allow foot traffic on the east spans?
The point I'm really trying to get at is that we need to make sure that we have really examined the situation and have a full understanding of what we are dealing with before we throw up our arms and say this is too expensive and we can't do it. What if we had decided the Penny for Pinellas wasn't worth the effort; how many projects would have been tossed aside because of lack of funding? Don't let another local landmark get brushed aside like we did to the Indian Rocks pier all those years ago; join us in our fight to save the Skyway piers and provide a place for families to enjoy for many more years.
Sincerely,
Jamie Andrews Largo, FL

Got this auto response.. Keep the emails a comming people.
Dear Friend,
I am sorry for this impersonal response. I just wanted to let you know that I received your e-mail, but due to the large volume of e-mails that I receive everyday (sometimes hundreds) from across the Florida, my duties as a State Representative do not permit me to answer each e-mail in a timely manner.
Rest assured that my staff and I review all the mail we receive as we value your input and views regarding the issues that affect all of us. If you are a resident of District #48 and have a specific request such as an appointment or help with a personal issue, please call my District office at (727) 943-4880 between 9-5 pm Mon.- Fri. so my staff or myself can personally take down the information needed to help you.
Once again I apologize for this impersonal response. I appreciate your support and look forward to working with you on your issues.
Sincerely,
State Representative Peter Nehr

Here's the response I got from Peter Nehr...
"I wish to thank you very much for contacting me with your concerns with regard to the closure of the east side of the Skyway Fishing Piers. Idid some research on this and unfortunately there is nothing I can do to help you. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and theFlorida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) have concluded that the eastern portion of the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park will need to be closed in order to preserve public safety. This closing will take effect as you know on August 29th. The western portion of the state park will remain open. The eastern part of the Skyway Pier was built in1954 and was only intended to be in use for 50 years. This time frame has elapsed and the pier can no longer be safely maintained. Thewestern part of the pier was built in 1971 and has not met its 50 year life span. However, the western part of the pier will be inspected to evaluate maintenance needs. Construction will also begin on August 21stto modify the western pier to allow two-way traffic and a single lanefor parking. These fishing piers were never meant to be permanent structures. I appreciate your taking the time out of your schedule to convey your feelings on this matter. If there is anything else I can do to help you please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely, Peter

To the Honorable Peter Nehr; Mr Nehr, I am asking you to get i nvolved in saving the skyway piers as we know them today. As you know work has already been started to close one side of each pier. I understand that with money tight in the budgets that the costs would be in the millions to repair these piers but.....when it comes to saving the largest fishing pier in Florida, a pier that so many people men , women and hoards of kids use on a regular basis and visitors frequent on a regular basis it should be a priotity to keep it status quo. We who use the pier on a regular basis would like you to get involved NOW to at least arrange for the closed sections be opened up to foot traffic and with that in mind pursue the quest for funding for repairing the pier and bring them back to a safeand manageable state park. There are so many agencies to get funding from for this great pair of piers and the advantave for our kids and their kids for a long time to come is beyond workd. At any given weekend night if you went on either pier at 10 pm you would have to WAIN IN LINE to get to the toll booth and you would have to look for a parking spot even at that time of night. The families that go there sometimes stay all night. What better place for kids to group and bond together than a place like the pier where there are no drugs or drinking and where the learn to respect our enviornment and the laws of our waters. Pleas help, get in volved, and help save the piers, and when it comes time for reelection, you willl have many people voting for you. Cliff Sampson
this is todays e mail before his responce from the phone call

No need to apologize Monty.
It amazes me that from all the calls and e-mails that I have sent that I have yet to see one article or reporter on this issue. I'll give the press thru this weekend to see if they are just doing their homework first or are just not interested.

I would be sending "State Representative Peter Nehr"as well as any other elected officials that have anything to do with state government or the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) a letter advising them to get their resumes ready to enter the private sector.
