Got to the Fort Desoto Gulf Pier right around 7am. Tide was slack, not much going on. Caught a bucket full of bait and threw some lures and live small greenies for a while. Caught one nice mac. Then the tide turned & starting going out. As it picked up speed, the small jacks showed up, picking off bait in the eddie behind the piles. It was drop a greenie, hook a jack for a while. Put about 6-7 in the cooler. Then things slowed for a while, a mac here and there up and down the pier. Around 9:30 am, the macs made a showing in good numbers, first they were down current and wanted live greenies. Flipper was around and some nice macs got stolen. It was a slow steady bite until about 10:30 when the macs suddenly shifted to the up current side, pinned the greenies close in to the pier and went on a sure-enough feeding frenzy for about an hour. Mainly hitting bubble rigs with a small white jigs but a few being caught on greenies and spoons. Sometimes 3-6 macs at a time were following the bubble, swiping at the bait. I ended up with 9 keepers, about 6 throw-backs and I lost some real slammers. At around 11:15 they moved on and the bite died. Headed home at 11:30.

The few times I fished desoto it was all about the macs. Don’t see too many keeper snapper there.

Before the tide got cranking, I had a nice snap come out from the behind a pile and take a swipe at a little greenie but he missed and a jack nailed it.

I will say this, yesterday was a lesson in adjusting to what the fish want: Bubble & popping cork rigs with a small white jig were out-catching anything else hands down during the late morning frenzy. But a lot of guys stuck with egg sinker/spoon rigs and mainly just watched me and another couple of guys catch fish. I keep 5 rods on my cart, one with a mackeral jig, one with a bubble rig, another with a egg sinker/spoon rig, one with just a 50# leader and #1 hook for throwing small greenies and one rod rigged for snapper. Be flexible, change up what you are offering until you find what the macs want!

Are you using wire when rigged with small crappie jigs? 25 - 40# leader. Just accept that you might get cut off on the first cast.

I use 40 or 50# mono for mac leaders.

I never tried crappie jigs for macs, but it seems as if you would get cut off every time. But I will give it a try. There had been many times the bite on spoons stopped while others were killing it with other set ups.

Just need to pop it out and switch it up fast.

You will but 40# and 50# helps.. if they are not biting we drop down to 30# and sometime 20# even! They are cheap anyways.

Cheap spec rigs work behind bubbles too, they usually have 30# mono. I cut them off and retie with 50#.
