Before I left, I painted a couple of Squid Spoons White just to try them on the Macks. My Girlfriend & I got to the SS Pier about 3:00pm just in time for the Top of the High Tide. Then I saw a few Old Friends after We set up and We began Fishing at My Usual Spot. There was quite a bit of Bait there until the Tide Changed. About about 3:30pm the Catching began. My Girlfriend scored first with a 14 & 1/2" Mack. Then several others began pulling in some Nice Size Macks with their Painted Spoons. I was not having any luck with My Painted Spoon so I switched back to My Usual Silver Spoon. Then on the First cast, I caught a 17" Mack. We had dinner. Then the Bite stopped after about 4:30pm after Flipper showed up and cleaned up the area. Now the Fish are in the Sink ready to be cleaned.

Always blaming poor flipper. Kidding. I just got my mojo back after last Sunday’s outing. Which means next few I will most likely strike out and be humble again.

I've been hearing about 20"+ being caught in the past week or so.

Why? How many times did you go to the pier 4 times over the past 3 months. First time 2 of us were slinging the spoon for a couple of hours (did not move up and down the pier a ton - constant issue). Other 3 times probably fished the spoon for 15-20 minutes and then just switched to target snapper, etc.

I have struck out many times, but not sure if 4 in a row. I use local spoon with 4 oz lead. I never stay in one spot, unless I get bites. But if bites stop, 6-10 casts, I'm on the move. I fish both sides of the pier. Mobility also applies to snappers. Got to find the fish. I'm not waiting for them to find me.

Although when not crowded. I’m mobile with my truck. Just keep moving it up the pier.

I agree, it's more much productive to move until you find fish vs. waiting for the fish to find you....

another tactic that is very effective, is when its busy just park, and walk and elbow in where you can. Strike up conversations Offer advice, or help to the guys out family fun fishin. Wanna see a little guys face light up? Hit the pawn shops and buy up the cheap rods. rig em up for grunts, and take em to the pier. Find a family and walk up and say hello. ( Its at this moment where you'll get about a 50/50 reply.) either theyll be friendly, or they wont. To the ones that are ask em some questions. Are yall catchin anything? Where yall from? How long yall here for... you get the drill. Make conversation. Next walk back to your truck grab a kid pole and bait it and go back. Cast it out and hook up a fish. Ask jr if he wants to reel it in. Once the fish is landed take it off the hook for him and give him a little talk about species ect. Next ( and heres the magic part) hand him "his" new rod and start to walk away. When they say hey you forgot your pole tell them " thats not my pole, its your pole now" 🤗
i do this all the time not only are you spreading the love payin it forward youve now gained friendly acess to the rockpile they are unknowingly covering up. Dont fish it long, but fish it long enough. In the event you should land a quality fish, include them in the whole experience.
You might just make somebodys day. Or thier entire vacation for that matter.
Back when the limit was 5 gags which I was never quite able to accomplish, I had my best day ever numbers wise at the pier, surrounded by complete strangers all catching bait for me, and helping me however they could. "We" wore them Grouper out that day and when I drove off the pier I had 4 big Gags and a 30 inch Flounder that barely fit in the cooler. Sidenote- And everone had a big happy smile on thier faces. Especially me. As a matter of fact, you dont even have to wait till its busy. Be kind to folks. Help everyone you can. Smiles and friendliness are contagious. And Karma is a bitch.

Went yesterday afternoon until dark. Macs are there full length of the pier just not in huge schools. Same size as MM said. Kept 6 from 14-18. Saw a couple that looked a little bigger.
Moved towards the end to try for grouper. Got 3 drifts before giving up. Tried for snapper on the rocks and got a small gag and more macs bites but no snapper.
Time to tie up some more jigs
