Hey All,
I'm an old fart just getting back into fishing after a long absence. So far I've just been using spinning gear catching Sheepshead, Snapper (1 anyway) and Grunts. However, reading the Grouper thread, I thought I'd dig out my old heavy gear. I have a Penn Special Senator rod with a Penn Level wind reel (209 I think). The outfit is 25 years old at least. I was wondering if the rod would still be useable, or would it be too likely to break in a fight with a keeper sized Grouper.

I've got a Penn 309 on a white Penn Long Beach Rod, bought them as a combo back in '97 and both are just fine. Yours should be fine too. I used mine for red snapper and grouper off AL back in the day, I just cleaned it up and respooled it with 50# mono. Also have a couple of 209s, I put 25# line on those, used them for vermillions & porgies back in the day, they will be my grunt/lane/mangrove rods.

I went through the shed and brought out my old gear. I have the Penn combo I mentioned, and also a shorter, thicker rod with a Penn 309 on it. All are a bit dirty, but otherwise ok. I plan to clean them up and put on new line and go fishing. I'm hoping to get out next weekend and give it a try. In the past I usually fished on the NSP, but I may try the South side if I don't have any luck.

Might want to take the reels into a good shop for service. OR if your mechanically inclined(which I am not) tear it apart and lube and clean it yourself.

They are fairly easy to take apart and clean, only tricky part is lining up the level wind. You can download diagrams online. New drag washers and parts are easy to find too. One note, Penn changed the gearing for the level wind on the left side, if the plastic gear strips, you have to make sure to order the old style or get the new one with an adapter part.

I'm out here just starting fishing. Not exactly I've been fishing fr maybe 2 years now. Still somewhat of a newbie. Currently having trouble with picking a good fishing reel. In order for you to get the best from fishing, you need to have the best fishing reel. Whether you are fishing in freshwater or saltwater, looking for the best fishing reel is essential. Fishing can be problematic if you are not familiar with some of the things that make up a good fishing reel. What set-ups does everyone have?

For inshore or pier fishing there is obsoletely no need for the best reels. Why? Most reels under $100 and even under $80 are fine. What is priceless is experience and knowledge. I have seen guys out fish others using a line spool. No rod no reel. I have one out of 12 reels that cost over $100. And it’s because I wanted the live bait feature. And I have a couple rods over $100. Little over. And more then a dozen under $80. All totally capable. I had no trouble grouper fishing. Just what exactly are you catching on freshwater to need top of the line equipment. I caught a ton of bass using my daughters pink $20 rod.
