Shadowxmas and I fished both piers at Ft. Desoto from 11 am to 330 pm. We only caught one type of fish, about 18 pin fish, between the 2 of us. She did get one very large one of 9.5 inches. Thought it was a grunt or porgy when it was being reeled in. She also had a big fish on but lost it. We used mainly live shrimp. We did not see much caught while we were there. I saw a couple of undersized sheeps caught and a guy landed a large trout while wade casting. Very nice weather with little wind but the larger fish and variety simply not there. Water quality not bad.

We were there for the incoming tide and part of the outgoing tide. The piers were not crowded. It was a beautiful day. I have not been fishing since back in April before seabird left to go up to WI for the summer.
Wish I could have seen the big fish that got away better. It came close to the surface then was gone. I did not lose any tackle with it.
Flipper showed up at both Piers but very briefly for about 5 min at Gulf Pier where we spent most of the time. He/she stayed out a little ways. He/she was very close to the Bay Pier. Even swimming under and all around. The tourists loved it.

I believe it's a county park not affected by the federal shutdown

I've caught pinfish offshore that easily went 2#s. You'd think you have a nice trigger or beeliner on and then get it to the surfaces and its like sh&%.

Do they have cameras or a way to tell the water activity at Desoto? Last two times I went it was absolutely rough waves and extremely windy and heavy grass -- but away from the piers I didn't notice much wind. I'd be nice to see conditions before making the trek.

I've eaten 8-9" ones before, scaled, gutted and baked. They were good. Fish of last resort but perfectly edible with white flakey meat!
