Greetings, My son and I went fishing at the SSP last Saturday night, we got there about 7:00 pm and left about 6:30 am.
I recently made an underwater green fish attracting light (I'll post some pictures later) and wanted to see how it worked. And I was very happy with the amount and size of the bait fish it attracted. I was able to sabiki 6-8 inch (not sure if they were sand perch or Blue runners) and 4-5 inch pinfish.
I put a Blue Runner out to try and get some grouper and I have not caught one out there, but this is what happened. I heard my drag spinning so I grabbed the pole and used my hand to work the drag (I now know this is a mistake as I should have tightened down the drag more} and off he went, I am used to using light tackle while wade fishing and let the fish tire himself out and also not break the line (Lesson learned, next time I will cinch down the drag more) We are at the west very end of the pier and when he took off he headed west instead of south towards the rock piles. after a few minutes he finally settled down and I was able to start gaining line on him. Then after a minute I could not feel him pulling but I was still hooked on something. Then he took off again and found another hiding spot and this time I couldn't move him off of it. So I figured he had gotten me into some rocks or other hazards and I tightened up the drag the whole way and started pulling the line in straight and it let loose. I reeled it in and to my surprise my hook and lead were still there (along with someone else) who had been fishing there recently as the hook leader etc all looked brand new and couldn't have been out there very long. Also attached to my hook was some type of oyster shell (both sides). hmm it was very frustrating to loose the fish but you live and learn.
More about the light we brought, it brought in some many bait fish big and small and at one time there were lady fish in every direction for hundreds of yards (their orange eyes light up when you put a light on them}. We also reeled in a few of these as they were kinda fun.
Later some dolphin showed up and ended our party and the lady fish party also as they were feasting on the baitfish.
Also my main rod n reel combo is a Shakespeare 7'Bigwater Ugly Stik and a Daiwa BG-6500 with 30 lb test.
If you have any advice for me go ahead, if you see me out there say hello, My son and I are usually in a Black Kia Soul.
