So I bought a Penn Slammer III 3500 from Amazon (too good of a deal) and should arrive Monday. Any suggestion on an inshore rod. I was thinking 7” MH fast either TFO or Shimano Teramar... any suggestion? I think it might be too much reel for a newbie like me.
I’m going to spool it with 30lb Power Pro. I will take it to the pier to get the line wet but intended for inshore/flats fishing.

What matters is: What are You wanting to catch with the Rod & Reel ? Example: 1. To catch Grouper or Sharks, then You will need a Heavier Rod & Reel to get the Fish. 2. To Catch Mackerel, Trout, Sheepshead, Redfish or a Snook then You could use a Med.Heavy Rod or Medium Rod & Reel. 3. To Catch Pompano, Pinfish & Grunts or Baitfish, You may want to chose a Light Rod & Reel. Catch where I am going with This ? Choose on want to Catch & then We can all give You Our Suggestions.

Now knowing what You want to catch, I would use a Medium or at the most a Medium Heavy Rod & Reel. That should do the trick. If Snookninja sees this Post, I am sure that He will Chime in and give You a more accurate Idea of the Best Rod to choose. After all, He is the Snookninja. I have seen him at work catching those Snook. You may also want to Personal Message Him for His Advise.

An important consideration is your budget - do you want to spend 30, 50, 100 bucks? Budget will determine what sort/brand of sticks folks will recommend. I'd look at a rod with a rating between 8-17 or 10-20lb test mono to match with that reel. In those ranges, there are rods that are lighter in the tip ranging to more stiff in the tip. If you can find one which as a moderately light tip, but plenty of backbone, then you could use the rod at both ends of it's rating better than one that is stiffer in the tip.
I have a couple of Ande rods which I like, one in each range. They exhibit the light tip/plenty of backbone noted above. I like them, as well as a 10-20lb rating Penn rod from years ago. Don't know if either of these are still offered today.
IMHO. YMMV, etc.

I have a couple of TFO's I love them, I've used the Teramars, my buddies fish with them, My TFO's feel nicer underload, I have them in 15-30 Heavy, and use them for big snook and Tarpon. The MH or M would be great on the smaller slammer 3.
You can't go wrong with either TFO or Teramar, other rods to look at in that range are the Crowder E series. Take your reel in to the store and check out what they feel like with the reel on, some reels better balance the rods out. I have two indentical TFO's 7'11" Heavy action rods, I have a stradic 4k on one and Saragossa 5k on another, the heavier Saragossa actually feels better balanced on the rod. Both nice to use, but I end using the Saragossa combo more often.
Good luck.

skywaypa, which tackle shop can I get my hands on that Fenwick... I would like to put my hands on the rod before purchasing. snookninja, who sells TFO around the Tampa Bay area... I didn't see any at Gator Jim's and of course I didn't seen them at the big box stores either... I've been very interested in TFO from a lot of people's reviews and also the rod having some Gary Loomis DNA.

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. I ordered mine from FishUSA (PA fishing board + online store) because they ate the shipping and they ended up just drop shipping it to me from Fenwick. Might have to visit a few of the bigger tackle stores in your area and hope they have them. Or wait till Feb and catch me on the skyway... you can try mine.
