So, my wife goes fishing with me every so often, she's a basic setup gal and went with an Ugly Stik BigWater 7ft medium combo. The rod is great for the pier, a little spongy but that's Ugly Stik (I own a few). The reel on the combo is terrible and I was thinking of upgrading her to a FRCII4000LL, she heads out with me maybe 3-4 times a month. I found a KastKing Sharky III Baitfeeder for about half the price but I don't know much about the brand. I've seen YouTube reviews but everyone that reviews KastKing seems to be "fan boys" and not give realistic value, pros, cons and overall take aways. I was wondering if anyone uses them, any thoughts, what it compares to, etc...
Let me know folks

A lot of these Chinese brand reel.. they give it away to people so they can post good reviews for them. I would stick with the Penn reel.

I take a Penn reel over just about anything. The Fierce line is a good reel for your wife's needs...going by what you wrote. GK

Shocking reels made by Kastking. I have 3 bait runners the Eposidon Maelstroms, which is the umbrella company for Kastkings. All failed within a few months, cost me decent fish too. They look way better than they perform.
The Reel's don't like being put under load. Drag is not smooth, drags failed multiple times.
At first I thought they were a bargain, went and bought two more. Then the drag started playing up, the baitrunner feature would turn on when the drag was under load? or the baitrunner switch would just jam. That was consistent on all 3 reels at different sizes.
I would avoid them like the plague, spend the money on Shimano's or Penn's. Most of the reviews on amazon are because the reels were given to the reviewers.

tears143 georgekingfish snookninjaThanks for the feedback. As I did more research independent reviews (not a lot could be found) seemed to not be in favor of KastKing, even with a comparable value brand like Piscifun almost all reviewers voted Piscifun. I was already leaning toward Penn FRCII4000LL (a reel I would use anyway if the wifey doesn't go) and it looks like that is what I'll be ordering. I'm thinking of ordering one anyway to use and test to see how long before it starts to fail and give problems.

If you get one just for Testing and Evaluation, we would certainly love to hear your review!

Spend the extra cash and get a shimano baitrunner. The OC version is a great reel. If you're set on the Penn, go to your local tackle store and get the drag washers upgraded to the carbonex ones, they'll improve the performance and smooth out the drag.

tristan, I ordered a Sharky for testing and hopefully get to test it on Wednesday. I'll let everyone know my thoughts, initial impressions and after a few months of use. snookninja, I have a FRCII6000LL and FRCII4000 and each one is upgraded to carbontex, definitely the way to go. I haven't found them at the local tackle shops (only looked at two stores though) but I just order them online and they're usually around $10 for 4000 and $15 for 6000. I find it weird that Shimano doesn't outfit their reels standard with carbontex (maybe that's changed recently) but no one has every complained about it not being smooth or being an issues. They must have figured out the best formula for oil-felt washers.
