I have a friend coming down to visit from up north the second weekend of October. He really wants to catch a pompano. I have a bit of experience catching them on the beach when I lived in Brevard but I have not caught any since I moved to Tampa in '09. Any tips on how I can put him on some pompano? Is early October even a good time on the west coast for them? I know on the east coast Jan-March were my most productive times.
Thanks

It's a perfect time to hunt for pompano.. it's getting better and better.
Look at the sticky notes and if you have any question feel free to ask me.

Wow how did I miss that sticky!? That definitely covered any questions I had. Thanks! That is a heck of a chapter on pomps in the sticky notes. If I may add my 2©.... The Doc's Goofy jigs are the primo standard. However, lesser costly Wigglers (Wal-Mart), Wacky jigs or Silly Willys (online) will often do the trick (though the latter ones have expensive shipping). Hot pink teasers seem to work best for me. They come with the Docs (though there are Doc's Goofys sold without) or you can pick up a few online. If you're really into the pomps, I encourage guys to make their own teasers. As you now know, it's a different animal from chucking a double dropper rig out on the east coast. Don't get me wrong, effective but right now with them 6-8' waves from them hurricanes, HECK NO! LOL. Good luck in October. I just might run into you out there.

Anclote power plant run off is fantastic for pompano and permit, but that is a november to feruary fishery area. But they stack up in there when it is cold. Waders are a must to get after em good , but they do get em on the pier.
