This will be my third trip to Tampa in the fall, but I am thinking of heading out to Skyway for the first time. I have been targeting Snook, Sea Trout, and Snapper from some of the piers on Anna Maria Island (e.g., Rod & Reel) in past years.
My current setup is Penn Fierce II 3000, with a Cabela's Rod rated for 10 to 17lb line weight. Sometimes I had a difficult time pulling fish out from underneath structure with the rod.
I would like to potentially target some king mack or grouper at skyway. Maybe even small (less than 5 ft shark).
What rod / reel combo (I'd prefer spinning to baitcasting) would you guys recommend?
What will be the fish to target in late October?
Thanks for help in advance.

I'd step it up to a Penn 4000 or 5000 (I use a 4000 Penn Battle).I prefer the Ugly Stik Tiger Lite rod with 14- 40lb rating. But then again, I'm primarily going for macks. Your 10-17lb rating won't cut it on Skyway unless you want to keep it tight to the pillars for snapper or sheeps. For casting or drifting out toward the rock piles for kings or grouper you really need to go heavier. 20-30 lb line with 50-80lb leader and a MH or H rod to handle that if you're teasing the grouper because you might need to dig'm out of their hole. SSP = big time structure, plus all the other hardware out there on the bottom you have to deal with. I'm sure some of these veterans here will chime in with better advice. GK

Dude.. you need at least 3 different setups for what you want to catch.
At least 2...
One for grouper, kingfish, shark, and snook.
A lighter one for bait, macks, trout, and snapper.
lighter one - 4k - 20 lbs braid should be good enough. heavier one 8k - at least. - at least 50lbs mainline for grouper. But you can do anyways with 30lbs.

fishrva:Georgekingfish is telling You exactly how it is Fishing at the Skyway. To catch Macks, You will need 20lb. - 30lb. line with at least a 40lb. leader. To pull up a Grouper, You will need at least a 30lb. line with at least 50lb. leader with a Medium Heavy Rod like georgekingfish said. I have learned from experience out there especially watching others losing their catch. Why go through the trouble of You making mistakes out there when You can learn the right way from others here on the site that is trying to help You catch Fish. GK When you say Tiger Lite, do you mean Tiger Elite?

Ya know, it's Tiger Lite. But I see all these Tiger Elites out there online. It might be they "upgraded" the series or dropped the Lite series all together.
I bought mine on Amazon last year:
Shakespeare One-Piece Heavy Action Ugly Stik Tiger Lite Casting Rod, 7-Feet
But...... It says unavailable now.
Sorry, but I'm not sure if they are or were similar.

GK Tiger Elite is their upgrade from previous "Lite" model... if you look at they way they decal the Elite the "E" blends with the background to have the "lite" stand out on the branding... Very sneaky these people in advertising.

Tears and MM are on the ball.
Your 3000 setup is good for bait fishing, or for Mangroves/sheepshead/pomps.
For bigger I prefer to go conventional or big bait runners.
Budget helps.
6000 or 8000 baitrunner style (shimano baitrunners OC/D, Finnor Baitteaser, Penn ssv liveliner, Okuma's new CDX), heavy or extra heavy rods, longest you can get, at least 7.6ft or 8ft. Spool with 50lb braid, with leader 50lbs or over. xtra strong circle hooks in size 6/0 or larger. On these setups I have caught big snook to 8ft sharks. (only with heavy Mono or steel leaders for the sharks)
Conventional reels such as Shimano TLD/torium, Penn squaw/fathom, Avets or Accurates in 12 to 20 sized. Running same terminal tackle as the spinners.
Good luck with your selection!
