I went out to check on the condition of the Redington Pier. Not surprisingly, it is closed. It has been in bad shape for a long time and was damaged in last year's storm. Bad ownership big part of problem as well. If any one has been on the Ft. DeSoto piers, especially, please write in and let us know what shape they are in. Other pier updates and conditions welcomed! Too busy to fish now, doing clean up work.

I also have been busy, (I own a stump grinding company). I have seen pics of the tower N of the gulf pier is rippid in half, top piece is just barely sticking out at low tide, if any one has a boat or freinds with boats, please warn them as it is still unmarked and very dangerous, also reports of submerged debris all over our local waters, tell everyone to be careful while on the water. Upside is possible new artificial reef close enough to assess with kayak or canoe!

I hope they leave the structure in the water but they need to have a marker or flag to warn boaters.

You know the macks and snappers are already using it to ambush their dinner, wish I had time to get out there!

I know there are a lot of members on this board that dislike the Redington pier, but I have had great success there. There is rarely a day that I don't catch a few Pompano in the morning and limit out on Trout in the evening. Filling the cooler with some Flounder, Mackerel and an occasional Redfish, Black Drum or Snook is not uncommon. My biggest Black Drum in Florida was caught there.
I would love to see that pier damaged enough to requir a major overhaul. Maybe even cause the owner to sell. But that just never seams to happen.

I had worked there for a short while. I did well with black drum there, macks and even pomps and a huge redfish. Lots of whiting there in season too! I have seen anglers catch many large trout there at night and sharks were taken off the end of the pier. Why I dislike it is the lousy ownership and the rip off prices for admission, parking and bait. I would hope there is a change of ownership and that the pier is rebuilt to a safe condition.

The base entry cost isn't much higher than the piers on the Atlantic coast. It's the extras: extra pole, parking, bait, fishing from the end, etc. that add up.
I walk there, take my own bait and only use two poles, keeping cost to a minimum.

I am going to check on the small piers at Sand Key and Bellaire Causeway to see their condition within next few days.
