I found myself with some free time and a few bucks so I decided to go get 3 dozen medium shrimp and head out to Simmons park. I thought I had a good window to avoid the rain after looking at the weather radar. I was wrong. It started pouring almost as soon as I got a line in the water around 6 p.m. There was several bait fish schools being chased around by what I guess were small snook. All I could manage was one very angry needlefish. After getting swarmed by mosquitos even in the pouring rain and being stalked by the day-waking raccoons, I decided to leave and head for the Skyway in search of a break in the clouds. I was able to find a dry place fishing the jetties in front of the NSP. Was there from. 7 to 815 p.m. and had 1 tiny Mutton, 2 smallie Mangroves, 1 keeper Mangrove and threw back another one that was just at the ten inch mark as well as a 13 inch trout. I missed a lot of hook sets too. There was multiple schools of bait being thrashed by something so much that it looked like the whole schools were jumping out of the water. Not too bad as I didn't expect much with the weather.

karneei: Thanks for the report. I have encountered lots of aggressive raccoons at Ft. DeSoto towards evening when fishing from shore in the backwaters. They'll come right up to your bucket. That's when it's time to leave and fish the piers! I did not know there are small (at least) mutton snapper at the piers.

Thanks for the report. Nice to see the mangroves are still active on the pier!

Wow, never had them come all the way up to me at Simmons, but there out all day, freaked me out the first time I went. The mutton was a small and I did catch a six inch one at the NSP once. Probally just hanging out there till they get a little bigger then go father out.
