With a friends boat we went to a spot under Gandy Bridge and fished there from 9.30 to 11.45 until we seen that rain and thunder start to come in our way .we were using live shrimps and got 7 mangrove snappers smallest was 12 inch and 2 nice size macks, but caught lots of 10 inch or smaller snappers and they went back to water, there was lots of tread fish jumping every were.. Snappers was really hungry, the tide was in coming and water was clean and the wather was sunny and hot until rain start to come in.. It was really nice to be out there and fish again. IT WAS REALLY STRANGE TO CATCH MACKS WITH LIVE SHRIMPS UNDER GANDY BRIDGE .

It is interesting that you guys say you never use shrimp to fish for macks. Basically my whole life growing up my father would take me down to the Dunedin Causeway, when the macks were running, with about 2-3 doz shrimp. We would put them about 3-4 ft under a cork and end up leaving with sometimes up to 10-15 macks everytime. The only other live bait I have used for them that worked significantly better are greenbacks. I havn't tried using shrimp for macks on the skyway pier yet, but I would say its worth a try.
And for artificial, I have always used a shiny spoon, or top water popper. I can't deny that something shiny seems to get a macks attention more but sometimes you can get them to hit anything.
Even with ladyfish, I have been out on the Dunedin Causeway on the toll bridge watching the fish just pop everything in sight. I would throw a top water lure, a spoon, NOTHING! I was joking with a friend that I would try just reeling in my carolina rig with squid on, and they would hit it! Craziest thing I ever seen.

Greenbacks is the Bait for Macks but I normally use a Spoon. I completly agree with you @mackerelman. I would much rather throw a spoon or drop down a greeny. I just always find it interesting when something I have had great success with someone has NEVER or rarely caught the same species on. I use to fish with a family friend years back, and he would fish with the craziest things with SUCCESS. I literally saw the guy catch a snook jigging a damn hotdog through the water. I laughed at him up to the moment he hooked into something. Then when he held it up and just gave me that S$&# grin. I had no words but to shut my mouth. From there on out, anytime someone tells me something strange I try not to be surprised, but consider trying it if someone made it work. Another crazy story, me, my uncle, and his son (at the time he was 12) was fishing down in the keys (Family Vacation). My uncle and I were fishing with ballyhoo trying to catch Barracuda. His son, had uncooked bacon and he was DETERMINED to catch one on it.....and you wanna guess who caught a barracuda first? Yup, his son on bacon. All we could do is look at each other dumbfounded while his son bragged through the entire trip.

Chicken, Hot Dogs, Bacon, Piece of a MD Big Mack, Piece of a Fish Sandwich & a French Fry. For Macks I have success using Greenbacks, Spoons, Gotcha Plugs, a McDonald Straw & Hook under a Clear Float & Artificial Plugs that resemble a Greenback.
