Got to the pier at 9:00AM, sabiki plenty of greenbacks... no shortage of bait schooling today. Threw out a couple of cut greenies, the current was pretty slack, not a lot of action going on. Got a few bites here and there but no hook ups. I decided to throw out two greenies to soak, one on a 6500 into the rock piles and another on a 3500 infront of the rock piles. I see the 3500 getting some action, I open the bail and a few moments later the fish takes it. I set the hook and off the fish goes. He starts running parrelle to the bridge, I tighten the drab down to about 10lbs and he's still smoking my reel. Big fella takes a pause, for a split second I think to myself maybe I can turn him, nope, off he goes again. I'm looking at my line and realize I have about 100 yards left, he keeps running... 90yards, 80, 70, 60, 50, the reel is screaming and my drag is getting toasted. 40 yards, 30, 20, I have to break him off! I lock down the drag manually and pop goes the hook!
Got one 12" Mango and lost, which felt like a snapper to the rock piles. Flipper was roaming around, snagged me twice but spat out the hook.
Fun day, too bad for the one that got away.

Imac813:Great Report ! Sounds to Me like a Grouper tool You to the Rock Piles. I have had that happen quite a Few Times. It always happens when You open the Bail & let out line. They Run Like Hell & Hide in the Rocks. My Advise is tighten the Drag before You Open the Bail. I have learned that from past Experience. You never know when they are doing to run. Glad that You had an Exciteful & Fun Day. Fish On & Fill those Buckets & Coolers with those Tasty Seafood Treats !

Sounds exciting! It's always tough to lose one when you don't get the chance to at least see what it was. I guess that keeps us going back for more. I do look forward to finally getting a good one hooked up at the pier like you had.

Hearing that drag scream was exciting, too bad I didn't even have a chance. Better luck next time.
