Is there a large population of Blue Crabs in the Tampa Bay area? In Maryland saltwater you can't leave a dead bait, or live one for that matter, on the bottom for long without a Blue Crab stealing it. If they are around a piece of cut bait will only last for about 5 minutes before your hook is picked clean. I the Tampa Area, if there are no pinfish or other small fish around I have had baits sit on the bottom for some time with no evidence of crabs. I just never thought they were there.

yodafisherman: I am not crab expert but I lived in Maryland for several years. You are right about the huge numbers of blue crabs there. I have seen crabs here off the piers at night but the population is less down here. I am biased but IMHO, the Chesapeake Bay Crabs are better tasting than the ones here in Tampa Bay. I have had very little problem with crabs nibbling at my bait here.

Maryland is the Blue Crab State. You have Cooler Waters for them. Everyone Down Here wants Maryland Blue Crabs.
I have found that in the Winters Down here that We See Larger Blue Crabs than in the Summer. But the Gulf of Mexico does have a Large Abundance of Blue Crabs down here.
