How many of you have used, with success, plugs or crank baits for grouper on the Skyway? What brand, size and color were you using? I have seen a number of YouTube videos and snippets on this forum on the topic, but have not found any with a lot of detail about the lures themselves.

You bet. All kinds of styles, sizes and colors will work. My BIL caught a gag on a blue and white bass lure. Changed out the treble hooks. My all time favorite is a Yozuri pink med depth. Gotta watch the rock piles. Let my friend use it and lost in on the first toss.
Edit: Oh Yeah...Floaters are best. Let them drift out with the tide and retrieve from there.

I have caught Gags at the SS Pier with an 8" Mann's Deep Diving Lure shown Below. Depending on how much Sun & Clouds is out You just have to find what Color the Gags will Hit on. Blue & Green & White is My Favorite Color to Fish with at the Pier. AS Havetofish Stated; Let the Tide take the Lure Out & Start Reeling In.

I like bright pink and chartreuse myself, But I also go with what ever is on sale at the time if they aren't junk lures. here are a few styles I grabbed out of one of my boxes. I will also toss a smaller deep diver as well from time to time depending on the size of the bait running at the pier. (Match The Hatch) "TIP" Fingernail polish is cheap. You may get some funny looks when buying it, but its a great cheap color change in a pinch. I always keep a few colors in my box (white, silver, pink, chartreuse.....) They don't take up much room, and dry pretty quick. BTW if you are going to take some from your GF/Wife you might want to ask first lol or this may happen.... Tight Lines

This is what they were hitting on Sunday, again I was on a boat, Black and Silver was not working, We were in the Skyway waters and the Grouper were hitting them hard, of course the boat was doing the work of pulling them off the bottom.

Great tip about the nail polish, blacktip!
I started a Fishing Hacks thread in the Off Topic section a while back. That would go great there!
I keep a bottle of clear gel polish at home for teaser fly tying. Never thought of colors for beat up jigs, plugs, etc.

I'm surprised at the colors that are successful. I would expect colors like Mackerel, Dorado, Silver/Black, maybe yellow/chartreuse and the like. Not Pink or purple. As a bass fisherman I have always experienced that the lure needs to mimic the natural pray closely or the fish will not bother with it. Looks like the saltwater species are less finicky.

ft86tt, I've seen that video and a few others. That is what has prompted my question. In freshwater I use lures only. In saltwater I've not been that successful. I want to give lures more effort and try to be successful.

I think the colors have more to do with wavelength and light penetration through heavier density seawater. Supposedly red colors to a fish get more invisible the deeper you go. It amazes me how successful plugs are non-natural in coloration. Hot pink? This is my opinion. I have asked but never got a straight answer from this guy:

The Mann's Plugs are Great. There are a Few Other Brands that Can also Work Just As Well. The Larger Mann's Plus are Great Trolling Behind a Boat.

If you troll behind your boat, make sure to have your drag set properly and keep an eye on your depth finder. Seen many people break and lose rods completely when using this method.
