Last week's robbery / gun has prompted some people to question their safety even saw a comment that someone would stop going to the pier because of that incident....
While on the pier but I follow some pretty simple rules, which applies where-ever I leave my car
1... never leave any valuables in a car wallet and phone are always kept with me if you must leave something of value PUT IT IN THE TRUNK 2... If you see someone going through cars... don't approach them keep an eye on them (be sneeky about watching em) call 911 with that phone in your pocket .... a good description height weight clothes etc it is tempting to approach the person but you never know what they may be carrying knife, gun or good ol brass knuckles
with the above being said .... that guy must have real big balls. Cause robbing cars with the owners mostly being close by is a real gamble the odds of getting caught is high. Your local Supermarket parking lot is a much more dangerous place .
more importantly... to keep safe follow some simple guidelines
a) No bare feet .... too many lost hooks are around b) Keep off the railings... definitely no sitting on them. If you go over and the current is strong, you'll be past Forte Desoto in no time c) don't leave sharp knives etc lying around too many kids are around d) Stop fishing during thunder storms .... holding any pole in the air while lightning is around is not a great idea.
the above list is not a complete list , just some basics stuff that I have seen on the piers over and over again
Keep safe and tight lines

CONSTANT VIGILANCE! Well, more like situational awareness. Like most people I love to fish, and even though I'm not much for strangers when I'm on the pier I'm friendly and happy to talk to people about fishing. The vast majority of people I've seen and met on the pier were decent folk just trying to enjoy some fishing. But every once in a while you'll see someone who isn't acting right. I look at it like anything else I do. Keep your eyes open and head on a swivel. Luckily the pier is really scenic in its own right, so nobody should give you any guff for looking around.
When someone approaches you read their body language. You don't have to be fearful to be prepared to gain separation from unwanted advance. People generally don't walk up on me, probably because I'm a big guy. But you should respect peoples personal space and they should respect yours. Bad guys are very often opportunistic. Being attentive to yourself and your stuff goes a long way to ward them off.

Always be Cautious of Your Surroundings. Fishing with Other Members here on Proboards or with Friends I would Highly Recommend if You are afraid of Visiting the Piers. Fish in a Group & with the People You know. Have a Girlfriend like I have with a Sabiki especially when the Person cannot cast straight. Everyone keeps their distance then. No One Wants to Get Hooked ! The Crap that happened Last Week is Very Rare !

any news reports or links about the crime? I've looked and looked, but can't find a single article. I heard about it from Goindeep, he was fishing on the pier when it happened. I've heard a lot of crazy stories from out there, but never a robbery.
