Has anybody tired using 60lb mono to freeline a pen at skyway? If you have is it doable or is it to heavy for it to reach the reef? I usually use 30lb but i have 60lb spooled on my conventional right now and i don't feel like taking it off and switching it over to 30lb before my trip.

It is fine. Most people like braid more due to lesser stength. Much easier for the grouper to rock you with mono.

Heck no. Maybe for leader material, but I use 20-30 for that. And the leader is 5-7ft. Typically the leader is 40-50lb flourocarbon though. 30 for greenies and heavier for pinfish. I dont use a great big hook either. Up to a 3/0 will do just fine. Using bigger heavier stuff I've found gets you less bites and also interferes with the swimming action of the bait. It weighs and slows it down because of the extra drag the heavy line makes. A big hook like a 5/0 or bigger will do the same and kill it faster.

Lookin for some help on catching some Grouper or other fish "off the rocks" at the SSP, Can anyone help?
I have a good enough rod n reel to get the bait out there, but I am doing something wrong as I just get caught up on the rocks.
Do you freeline them out there, if hos? Any help appreciated.

If You get tired from getting Rocked from free lining Your Bait then You might want to tie a Balloon to Your Line. Tie the Balloon about 6' from Your Hook with a 1 oz. Lead sinker about 2' from the Hook to keep Your Bait down in the Water. The Depth of the Waters around both of the Skyway Piers is approximately 8' to 13' deep. The End of the NS Pier is 26' Deep. The End of the SS Pier is 24' Deep.

Thanks Mackerelman, I will try that. I read somewhere here about using a mint and it disappears and the balloon fly's away have you tried that?

Thanks Mackerelman, I will try that. I read somewhere here about using a mint and it disappears and the balloon fly's away have you tried that? I used that method all the time when I used to fish heavier gear Works great. Peppermint resolves faster than the hard candies.

Brother-in-law taught me the lifesaver method for shark fishing back in the 70's when I was a kid. Seemed a lot easier to hook up sharks back then.....well, at least a lot more blacktips around. Although memories may be better than actual history.....you never know!
