I'd heard about this before but never tried it or actually seen it - a small treble hook about 3 or 4 inches of a straw on about 3' of leader, about an 1/4 ounce splitshot and a bobber - toss it out and reel in fast. Last two times out I was using a spoon, caught a couple but each time out I saw some people using this set up and catching 4 or 5 to my one - the Macks pretty much jump out of the water to grab it - pretty cool watching them chase it and grab it.

Here is one article capmel.com/straw_lure.htmA well known homemade lure for Spanish Mackerel is nothing more than a piece of a McDonalds straw slipped over a #1 long shank hook, 18 inches of mono leader and a barrel swivel. Here is how it is made: Cut a piece of leader of 25 pound test line, 18 inches long, tie it to a # 1 long shank hook. Measure the straw and cut it at the length of the shank of the hook. Feed the leader line into the straw and pull the straw down over the shank of the hook. Tie the open end of this leader to the barrel swivel. Put an egg sinker and snap swivel on your rod to give weight for casting. The snap swivel will keep the egg sinker from sliding down to the lure and make quick work of changing rigs by snapping to the barrel swivel. It works as good or better than any store bought lure when the Macks are around. If you think I am kidding, Google McDonalds straw lure.

Guess I'll give it a try in the morning - working from my "remote office" (always helps to give some of the catch to the women at the office). Got my straws and trebles, leader and all - let you all know how it works out!

When going after the Macks, do you cast directly into the bait ball that's being crashed or try to work the edges? How far away from the bait ball can you still reasonably expect to still see some action? Would a spoon like this be a good choice? I've never caught a mack and would like to bring one home.

estreet, I just started catching a few macks myself, but that spoon will work just fine. I try to cast past the bait and work the lure right through it. I use a 2oz trolling weight, then about 6-7 feet of leader.
The best spot to catch em is where you were at last weekend. Ill be there Sunday and will try to get a few if theyre there.
Also, gotcha plugs work great too, I keep 3 or 4 in my tackle box at all times. Ive had better luck with spoons though.

Anyone ever see the guy ( looks like he is in his early 60's) on the NSP who drives a green SUV and fishes for macks?. He pulls up and cast out a spoon and catches mackeral. He never keeps them. Always gives them away.
I ask because this guys makes his own clark spoons.
If you see this guy stop and ask him for some tips. You may get lucky and he may give you one of his home made spoons. They work great.

estreetbrat......
everything mentioned will work for you to get your first mac(WARNING!!!MAY BE ADDICTIVE!)but i see no one went over how to use these arti's the way you should, asuming you don't know yet.with your spoon set-up,cast,letit sink, crank like crazy!!!but always try different speeds on the retreive if your not getting any hits.keep your rod tip down during your retreive also to keep your lure in the water longer.when you get your spoon to the surface drop it back down to the bottom and start again.
5 feet from the bait ball and your hooked up!....to answer your ??

This is some that I make and use. Where do you get the beads? I've looked at craft stores and my usual sources for craft beads. No luck.

Any craft store ,Chinamart, target, dick's. they all have beads. if you cannot find em at your local craft store... break down and ask someone! They are there. But Chinamart always has em but they are cheaper at the craft store
