Just before dawn there was Very Little Bait but as the Day rolled on, there was Bait Everywhere. 10 MPH Winds. Water was not Clear but Very Acceptable. All that Showed an Interest in this Meet & Fish showed. It was Just Fantastic. Let Me say, It was a Definite Pleasure in Meeting All Of You Anglers That Showed an Interest in This Day of Excitement & Carry Outs. There Will definitely Be More of What We did Today. We Arrived, We Fished, We Accomplished.
As for Me, I caught 1 - 15" Keeper in Which I Gave Away & 4 or 5 - 12" or Smaller in which I returned to the Bay to Come Back Next Year & Hopefully Bigger to Get On My Hook. I did get Cut off Twice By Macks that Both Gave Me Real Strong Hits. I did almost Catch A Very Nice Size One (Approximately 24" & Maybe Bigger) but He got Away on the Lift Up To The Rail. "I Did Have Witnesses !" It Was A Nice Start To My Day. And Yes Mr. Flipper Stopped By To Pay Me a Visit and Had One Of My Macks For a Carryout & Bit Off My Line Just 2" Below The Sinker. They are Beautiful Animals or Fish In the Water. I only Wish That They Could Find Their Own Fish In Stead of Stealing Mine & My Lures & Leader. See, that sounds Like My Bait Bucket. Cutting it off & Parading It Through The Water.
Once Again, I want to Thank All Of You for Showing And Meeting Dapagates, Tears143 & Myself. I Hope You All Had A Real Great Time. It is Real Nice when a Plan Comes Together !
I am not going to Tell You what Everyone Caught because That Just Would Not Be Right. Guys, Tell Everyone What You Got & Show The Pictures ! Best Of All, I got to Take My Bait Bucket Home With Me.

My neighbor and I went fishing for the second time in a row. So as usual, we stop at my pompano spot to try for some pompano. He was still setting up at the car, while I went to try my luck first. First drop and about 5 jig later, bang! pulled up two jacks at once. The guy on the bottom saw what I did and hurry up to the bridge. Second drop, bang another jack. Finally my neighbor came and saw that I got three already and his jaw dropped. LOL After that, it's just jack left and right. There isn't pompano to be seen. Finally out of no where my neighbor got slammed and landed a nice 14" pompano. It is his first ever, so it's excited for dinner and such as well. He never had pompano. He's in for a treat. Other than those one, never really was happening other than those jacks.
So we went inside and set up near the crew. I called mackman to see if he was still there, I see him over there but wasn't sure. LOL. So we introduce ourselves to each other. Seems like the crew was having a blast, so I head back to my spot and started freelining. Probably the only one out of the group that freeline instead of using a lure. LOL
There's are off and on in the biting of the macks. I think I ended up limiting out on macks. When the tide change to incoming it was so much better.

Do you use the docs goofy jigs as the jig of choice? I catch pomps once in awhile with the sabiki and have also gotten some on the docs jig. Good to see that mackerelman retained his bait bucket but seems like the dolphins like the action he gets. Glad to hear that people had a good time and caught fish on a nice day!

Yes, I use mainly the docs goofy jigs... or similar one to it with a teaser. To be honest, I think you don't really need the jigs.. Just some weight to drop to the bottom with a teaser and jig it back up. Like your sabiki. Basically same idea. I think the jig might increase the chance a bit due to it swimming action.

It was nice meeting you all today. I wouldn't call it an on fire bite today, but seemed very sufficient for all concerned. I think everyone was satisfied. The Mackeralman seminar was a success.
I left at about 1:15pm and although the mack bite died down, they were still being pulled out on the incoming.
I totalled 5, 4 of them fairly early in the day. A 19, 17, two 15 1/2 , and a 14 1/2 incher. It was strange how there was no bait to be seen, then after sunrise the lil buggers showed.
Later about noon after things died down earlier, comotion started up as bait started being pinned to the surface and you could see the mack striking at them in tandem with the birds above. Caught my last one during the melee, lost a nice one. But neat watching nature.
Again, nice meeting you all and we'll meet up again with coach Mackerelman I'm sure.

Hi everyone,
Sounds like a good time, good catches and learning situation for all. Wish I could have been there but I had to work. Did anyone take pictures of their catches or a group photo? Please post if you did.

It was a very good day! It was nice to meet with the forum members as well! I got a chance to try different methods to catch mackerel. I used my new bucktails, Got-cha plug, Yo-zuris and Squid Spoon. Next method on my list would be Mc Donalds straw I got to keep two Spanish Mackerel, Fed one to a dolphin, and lost one in transanction of getting it over the rail. Once again I had a blast out there!

Finally out of no where my neighbor got slammed and landed a nice 14" pompano. It is his first ever, so it's excited for dinner and such as well. He never had pompano. He's in for a treat. I bet he is! I've had pompano before when I worked in hotels decades ago in Michigan. Great fish, and that's accounting for the travel from wherever it was caught (I never landed a pomp from Lake Michigan or Lake Huron...lol). I can imagine how it tastes fresh caught from earlier in the day. Hopefully I'll get my pomps this year when I start back surf fishing in the east coast. Just think tears, after he eats that beauty he'll be pompano "lusting" and always wanting to go fishing! D

Nice meeting you as well... D

Saturday was awesome. It was certainly a pleasure meeting everyone. My boys had a blast they learned alot and so did I. Thank you Mackerelman for helping me and teaching us. As far as my report it started off slow and yes flipper was really getting under my skin but what can I say that's his water. All in all a successful catch hooked 4 Macks 1 being 19.5 and the rest 2 18 in and 16in. When the tide slowed took soon shrimp on the bay side of pier and caught 6 mangrove snappers. Saw sheepshead but they were not interested in the shrimp. As a newbie still learning this forum is a God send because I was about to give up on the pier because so many time going away empty handed but now I'm counting down the days when I can go again.
Fish on? Oh yea Gottem!

Likewise, it was a pleasure meeting you and the boys. Nice size on them macks. Kind of a bonus hitting the snappers. Were you just freelining live shrimp near the pillars? I know the feeling about giving up on the Skyway. What I have learned is that there is a learning curve. Problem for me is the travel to get out there. I've read up on so many techniques, but what's so valuable is coming across a guy like Mackerelman who essentially coaches ya. I mean, a lot of guys will give you tips freely but it's nice when you are mentored. Nice too that you planted some memories in them youngins. Potential for future sportmen. Hope y'all had an awesome fish fry! Good job on the pier and hope we meet up again. I need to learn snapper techniques from someone....lol. D

I used a shrimp with 40lb mono leader 2ft and #1 circle hook with a split 1oz sinker at the end of rod line and let the current take the shrimp towards the pillar going up and down with rod. Using 15lb mono on the rod line
