I went to ss pier on Tuesday out going tide using white Gotcha plug caught my first Mack.. 20 inches threw my plug again bam snapped the line on 40lb Did you go during all that rain pumping in from the Gulf? About what time of day did you start? I was going to meet up with Mackerelman but it was windy, rainy mess with accidents on the roads. And I come from 2 hours away. So for a crapheaded day you did well. And yea, I had one just bite my spoon off my 40# leader right in front of me. It happens but I've done pretty good with 40# mono. D

I think I gathered/found all the tools I need. Thanks to Mackerelman. I got the Squid Spoon #00, 50 Pound mono, and a 3 OZ egg trolling weight. Hopefully I would give all these a try on Saturday. One question, do you over cast or under cast if a leader is around 8 foot in length? Also the longest fishing rod I got is about 7'7" and my height is around 5 foot 6. Could I make the leader a little shorter? Thanks!

ft86tt: you could Make our Leader a little bit shorter. It is basically what you are Comfortable with. I Myself Cast Overhand. The Last time I Casted Underhand, I just happened to take a Hat Off of a Man at 30 feet away who Just Happened to be a Judge. I did not know at the time but I was Fishing with His Son. Before I Knew that He was a Judge, He kept telling Me not to cast overhand. After that happened, He didn't say a word. If Fact, He moved about another 100 feet down the Pier away from Me. I use to see Him time to time & He gave Me some strange looks, but I have not seen Him in about Ten Years. I think I am safe now.

No Problem. I'll have to tell You about the Gag Grouper from 15 years ago & the 10' Nurse Shark just back in June. The Bait House on the SS Pier knows about that.

Mackerelman, Thanks again for the info and that is one story that's difficult to forget! If you are out there early, ft86 you can practice. I started out with 10 ft leader and I'm only 5'7". MM showed me overhand, almost overhead toss and I got the hang of it fairly well. However I shortened to 7-8 ft leader and here's why. A gang of marauding dolphins attacked us and I couldn't clear my hooked fish out of the water since it is about 8 feet down from my feet on the pier to the top of the water surface. So I shortened it a bit so if I raise my pole over my head, the terminal end should clear the dolphins. This works for me. For MM I'm not sure it does because for some reason, the dolphins leap out of the water if he's on the pier. He's got that kind of effect on our fellow mammals....lol. D

dpagates: Yeah; I do happen to have that kind of Luck, don't I ? I think the Dolphins want to either play with Me or Eat me in revenge. LOL

I always go Just before dark & sometimes it pays off. That was a week or so ago with an Outgoing Tide & I maxed out in about 45 Minutes. My Pics are up in the Picture Forum for that Day. Just look for the Picture with a whole bunch-(15)of Macks. Otherwise tears143's selection is right on Target.

A nice catch Mackerelman!! I'll probably target the grouper and see how that pays off. I have a pretty stout rod and reel with 40lb braid on it. Might just try free lining some bigger baits and see what happens. I've never caught a legal sized snapper on land before so might be something I could finally cross of the list with the light action combo. I'll probably be packing light and taking the filet knife and ziplock freezer bags with me. If there's room for a cooler it'll be small.

You can catch mack at night.. but those are mostly summer time, also very very rare. They will usually be around the lighted area if they are feeding at night. Other time I heard they just pick up dead bait off the floor at night... who knows. Best bet is the snapper at night. Snapper or grunts. I lied... there are flounder and snook as well...

I've caught Macks at night using Greenbacks back in March. It was a Feeding Frenzy that Night. Mack fighting Mack over a Greenback.
