Pompano? No such thing! :-p
North pier, south pier, the small bridge all have them. They come and go.
FYI: all bridges have them. They pass through them all the time.

Hi Mackerelman I need to know where you get the weights like you show in the picture .I cannot find any in Sarasota . I used to get bead chain troling weights in Wilmington N.C. The man at economy tackle did not know what I was talking about. I am new on the fourm and I realy like all the info you real fishermen put on there . I hope to get up there some time .My wife has the big lung C. So rad and chemo makes her sick. Thank you in advance rodbender. Tight lines and good fishing.

rodbender: I usually get the Weights here at Dogfish Tackle at 8750 Park Boulevard, Seminole, Florida 33777. But the batch before, I got them at Sports Authority. They usually come in a Bag of 5 or 6.

You can always do a fish finder rig with the spoon as well.

Seabird and I also wanted to get out there today but with the weather forecast last night we decided not to go. We went to see The Martian. good movie.
Wish we join up with all of you Saturday but I will be working and Seabird has the Wagonwheel Flea Market and may be working in the afternoon/evening.
Welcome Gatorfan,Rodbender, Jeffmol54 and any other newbies to the site. You and all the other newbies will get a lot of great information from the website. Mackerelman, dpagates, tears143, havetofish and some others have been fishing the SS piers several years and have a lot of experience and know what they are talking about. Follow their advice and you will do well.
Rodbender, what you want is a 3-4oz weight with a swivel on each end and take it from there and do what mackerelman said with the 30lb line on the reel and 40lb or more on the leader with a 0 squidspoon NOT clarkspoon to make your own rigs. Weights are available in many tackleshops. You might also find them at Sports Authority, Walmart, BassPro shops which recently opened in Brandon FL, Bill Jackson's which is on US 19 in Pinellas Park. Praying for your wife and hoping the chemo and radiation treatments are successful.
Tears143 hope you are feeling better soon. Glad you decided to go to the DR. to get checked out and get needed medications. The chicken soup dpagates recommended is also very, very good when you are sick. Hopefully you were/are up to it to make some or had someone make some for you.
Looking forward one day to meeting all of you on the SS piers sometime. Rodbender I will look for 3-4oz weights with swivels on each end and pick up a couple for you when I see them.

The trolling weights with the swivels are at the SSP baitshop, though expensive they will do in a pinch. I haven't found any inland. Seems a little hard to find the right ones but Dogfish Tackle seems the place for everything at decent prices. I haven't been there myself, I'm hoping to stop in soon.
I use the Clarkspoons and have pretty good success. Since I have stocked up on them I'll keep using them with an occasional Gotcha plug. I'll add in some Squidspoons as soon as I lose a few of these.

Bass Pro? I'm so jealous! We had them upnorth, love those stores. We're talking 18 years or so ago. Them and Gander Mountain. I think we have them in Orlando but too stressful of a drive for me. I wish we had them in Davenport.

1/8oz? a little light but add a little weight in front of it like a fish finder would work... or drop down and just jig up.

That is true. I figured I'll try the 1/8 oz first because I had good luck with the spec-jigs that were 1/8 oz too. If windy maybe I'll use a split shot right before the spoon

I will not make it on Saturday the 31rst. I am working a booth at the Wagon Wheel market. Normally I am pretty tired after 6 hours out there.
Good luck and fair weather for all of you out there.

I'm a newbie to forum but have gone plenty of times and caught just bait fish. I have learned so much on all the post and still learning. I'm so great full for everyone unselfishly share their knowledge. I would love to meet up.. I went to ss pier on Tuesday out going tide using white Gotcha plug caught my first Mack.. 20 inches threw my plug again bam snapped the line on 40lb mono leader. The rookie that I am I didn't bring extra white plugs I had a gold one but the Macks weren't having it. Some gentleman to my left were slaying them on a white small jig. They caught there limit and I'm still proud of my first Mack. Look forward to going this Saturday and learning more.

However, do they have the swivels on each side that allow it to roll or rotate? I bought some trolling sinkers online that were cigar shaped but swivels were fixed. Not good for the Mackerelman technique. Hope to see you and the wife out there. Fill yer buckets....
