First off this is my first post, tho I've been lurking around. Hello all. Went out Thursday night looking for snapper and hooked up my first shark on the north pier before it snapped. 3ft spinner cut thru my 40lb leader. After a few hours of no bites I headed to ssp. Nothing but hardheads. Shrimp was useless. Whole shrimp sat on the hook without a nibble. Saturday morning at 530am got spooled by a tarpon. 220 yards of 50lb braid gone in 5 secs. Leader broke before losing the mainline. Saw numerous LARGE snook swimming among the pilings. Mackerel action was hot around 11am. Silver and gold spoons were the key. They quickly got shy of the chartreuse speck jigs. All in all just good fun and a nice snack.

Nice! I am surprise that the bait fish left your shrimp alone. Usually pin will kill the shrimp before anything else grab onto it...
For macks, try freelining a greenies or drift a cut or dead greenies... Sometime those work better than spoon.

Yeah I was shocked too. Usually I can't keep my shrimp on longer than 30secs lol. I did try some free lining but they snubbed it. What seemed to work was a small spoon on about 4ft 40lb florucarbon leader and 1/2 oz weight above the leader. Reeled in fast using a popping action. Figured if the bait was leaping out of the water I'd imitate that. Worked well.
