Day started off pretty good. Wifey gave me a good luck bump & grind, made me breakfast & 4 sandwiches. Loaded the kayak the nite before so I was ready to go. Buying this kayak w/ all the bells & whistles for fishing was a great idea. Highly recommend it. Heck of alot cheaper than a boat. Trolling motor is a must.
My buddy met me at 7:30 as planned & we headed into the wilderness. 2 of us w/ our kayaks & fishing gear. Paddled for awhile & then used the trolling motor. Had a floating live well my friend came up with dragging behind him. ( He really needs to patent it. It's tip-proof & triangular so it can be pulled with very little effort or drag. 2 cup-holders & 2 water proof pouches for cell phone & hand held GPS).
We sabiki'ed up a couple dozen pinners to go w/ 5 dozen shrimp & the day was getting better. Free lined the largest pinner & had a shrimp under a popping cork floating along the root line. A 14" mangove hit the shrimp & God knows what hit the pinfish. Hit it hard enough that it dam near tipped the kayak. My buddy said he was pretty sure it was a shark. We were in only 2 - 3' of water. Never saw a fin or it's back but the wake it created made me nervous, gator? No more dangling the feet in the water. The little cove was filled w/ snapper. We had 3 apiece in an hr, biggest 15 1/2", all on shrimp. Tide was starting to come in good so we headed into the back country.
We tied up to a mangrove root & got out to wade. Water was 12-18'' w/ tidal channels everywhere. Oyster bars too. Just a great morning. I was casting a gold spoon while my buddy did same w/ scented DOA Shrimp, weedless. He got a 21'' flounder & a 22'' red. I got nadda. The tide was really getting strong so we paddled around to this little bend where 2 creeks merge about 20' before the cove. It was amazing. We had 6, no BS!! 6 doubles w/ snook and reds. Largest snook was 33'' & largest red was 37''. Kept 1 more slot red so we had enough for family fish dinner. All snook went back. We chummed w/ the shrimp thru the pins up to the mouth & let the current take them to the creeks. They were ambushing the pins. Just an awesome experience.
We trolled back while tossing a 3'' gold rapala & 3'' silver rattle-trap. My buddy got a 23'' trout & I got an 18'' 'er. We were back home by 3 & had about the best dam fish dinner ever. Sprinkle the fillets w/ old bay, alittle rosemary & lemon pepper. Saute in lemon butter. Add Italian breadcrumbs & put it under the broiler to brown the crumbs. De-glaze w/ white wine & pour it on the platter & lay the fillets in the sauce. Hush puppies, coleslaw & corn on the cob. Would have been a perfect day except I lost $80 playing poker that nite.
