Arrived at the SSP at about 9 P.M. and had some size 4 and 6 sabikis to load up greenbacks and pins. The size 6's were slightly too big and the 4's seemed too small (haha). Bait was here and there but we were able to replenish the live well without having to wait much. Friends were using Gulp! shrimp on 3/4 ounce jigs and the pins were tearing them up. I put together a quick grouper rig with no crimping on the leader so the egg sinker could let me cast far, yet let the outgoing tide pull the bait furthur. After 20 minutes of nothing I reel back and am hooked up with a gag grouper for the second time in my past two trips!
I muscled him out of the rocks and he was a real hog. Noticed he had either swallowed a hook or was hooked deep by another angler due to the dangling leader outside the mouth. I decided to put him on ice with a measurement of 23". Filleted great and learned how to cut the cheeks too.
My friends didn't have much luck except a huge bite on a cut greenback. The East span had a Tarpon lurking on a span right between the bait shop and bathroom. No luck tossing greenies out to him.
Saw some idiots throw all their empty cans into the water (driving a new escalade), an idiot drive by saying some obscene things and had my knife stolen by an old man who was wandering around the entire pier. The fishing is great, but the people are another story......
I attached a pic of the grouper that my buddy took. Good luck and tight lines!
