Work for the day was cancelled so I jumped in the car and headed over to the south pier. Got there around 8 am or so. Bait was pretty thick, but it was mainly small pins. I had never seen the pinfish school like that before. I had a grouper bottom rig on my 4/0 from my last trip so I sent out a pin to the bottom. About a half hour later the drag started peeling. Ended up being a decent 40" shark. Not sure what kind but maybe a lemon. I don't know. Soon after, the typical whitebait came in by the buckets and the mackerel followed. Seemed like every freelined greenie out there was getting chased by the macks but I struggled all day with actually getting them to bite. They messed with the live bait, spoons, gotchas all day. Managed to grab a nice 20" mackerel on a spoon, and two 14" on a sabiki. The guy next to me caught one of the nicest macks I have seen. Weighed in at 6 lbs. Also managed to flip a nice goliath but the hook pulled. Thanks for that advice on the other thread. Ended up leaving around 2pm or so with enough fish for dinner and a sunburn.

Sounds like a great day. when the macks are following and not hitting, i've found cutback to be the ticket. On the bottom, freeline or under a float but for me a float works best... but fish it fairly deep. Congrats! on the great day fishing!

The guy next to me caught one of the nicest macks I have seen. Weighed in at 6 lbs. . Sounds like it might of been a schoolie king. Six pound mack is pretty big. The average size of mackerel is less than a pound (1/2 kg) although some fish weighing 2 lb (1 kg) are found in deeper water. however the Florida's record Spanish Mackerel is not published, but the U.S. record was 37 inches long and weighed 12.4 pounds
