Hi fellow fishing fanatics I am coming to the area with my wife and daughter the last week of April. I plan on fishing the pier for a couple of days but would like to find a area to surf fish while my family can sun bathe and beach comb. I'm not fussy about species, my favorites are trout red fish pomps and mackerel. any help with a location, and other tips on fishing the area would be greatly appreciated.

Fort Desoto is just the ticket. It's a county park and has Gulf front beaches, and nice wade fishing on the bay side. Very family friendly. maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=27.618752,-82.735634&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mift&mrsp=0&sz=12&sll=27.609322,-82.691689&sspn=0.151505,0.216637&ie=UTF8&z=12

Yes, you can drive on both the NSP and SSP. The south pier is about twice as long as the north but fishing seems to be about the same regardless. Occasionally one spot is hotter than the other.
The convenience of driving to the fishing spot is great for those of us with bad knees, backs, and hips...and there are a lot of us!
Good luck to you!
