Hey Guys, Went out this morning. Caught some macks. Guy next to me caught a nice 23" gag. I lost 3 more goliaths today. That makes 9 total in the last 4 trips. I've been using 18/0 circle hooks, and macks or rays for bait. Bait and hooks are not the issue. Ive broken off every one of them. I'd say half were from being wrapped around the pilings and the others from pure force. I use a 9/0 with x stiff rod. I'm currently using 250 lb power pro. Ive tried to give them drag, I've tried to tighten it down to 0. No matter what...SNAP! I know these have been gags and not WTF or flipper since Ive hooked them many times. The closest Ive gotten so far was this morning when I fought the thing for about 5 minutes and it slowly got line. Finally turned and I was slowly bringing him up, and he took a second run straight down and SNAP! Any pointers or tricks to this?

filet and release then hide
Ive studied the science and the laws behind it, we are being robbed, they are using science that was stipulated by congress that they need to improve upon before implementation of any Mag-Stev. Acts. Same science that has proved to be false or at least in doubt. Thants what they use...
Then there is my paranoia with the passage of the UN doctrine of using all marine resources to fullest unless you want it to leased out to other countries.( Dont have a source off hand, it was a year ago, but I promise I can find it) So thats why they are doing it
Plus my own digging into their studies on the NOAA and Gulf council science where there are studies that say that rec fishermen put only a third of the pressure as comm.
And the list goes on
Im sorry guys, I pretty soon will no longer be following the rules that annoy you, I predict. This country (that I love!) is being stolen from me and another 89% of people there is nothing I can do about it...So until I can figure out how to get to Costa Rico or someplace comfy, This is my territory, not yours. Ive never seen Janet Lubchenco fishing, she wasn't out there with a bucket tide to my belt loop when I was 8. You havent gone out on a party boat and felt a force that is stronger than you on the end of a rod horse you around.
Sorry for the rant. The rich find ways to get around the law, and america is a land of oppurtunity. its your patriotic duty to find a way to beat the law to your benefit or else you aren't trying.

I know this will make me sound like a d#####bag but why target them to begin with? You can't even take the damn things out of the water! Waste of time and tackle if you ask me...

Ask the other poachers on the pier, they'll tell you. Frankly I don't see why your trying to bring one up anyway. With that being said, if he's 300 + pounder, you are not going to win without keeping pressure on him for a long time, I mean maybe hours.

I have to agree... just no point to fishing for them. I mean sure its a big fight but now those 9 encounters left 9 embedded hooks. You are in a uphill fight from the tide to the bridge pilings not to mention you are stuck on a bridge. Anyway, if you're going to do it... good luck... you'll need plenty of it.

i use a boat...... Everyone makes great arguments... plus you need to factor in... how the hell do you release it 18 ft above it..............
But if you want to catch one. and have a release method.......... You might need to hit the GYM...... I have caught 5 goliaths.... 2 were less then 30 inches 1 was about 130 lbs... 80 lb power pro.. and from a boat. 2 others from 200 to 400.. also from a boat.... you have to man handle them. Otherwise they man handle you and wrap a pilling... If you get one from the pier.. your a bad ass, or lucky as hell..
Locked down drag, Man up........ and hope for the best......

Your biggest issue with the break offs are the P.P.
Heavy mono is going to work better than braid for what you are tryin to achieve.Sure the braid is strong but there is close to nill abrasion resistance with that much fish at the end of it.First thing it comes into contact with.....PoP!You'd be surprised....i'd bet you'll do better with 200# mono vs the 250 braid out there.I used to fish the same way as you are.....but have gotten to use other gear(9/0..12/0 with 150-200#mono) than my set up with braid, and i got more fish up.
Stop usin the 18/0.......12/0 mustad xxx strength work fine but will not last near as long in their lip like those 18's.
Are you fighting your fish standing between the pilings or are you standing directly over a piling to fight? They are either going to head straight(if your at the end of the ssp)back or side to side.I have had better success standing directly over the piling as they usually would head left or right pulling away from me....and the piling.
I don't really fool with them any more.Not sayin i won't either.
If you have any way of making some kind of pole...extendabile...what ever, some how mounting a razor at the end to be able to cut your line at the hook. This is the main reason i stopped fishin for them...didn't like leavin any line hangin from them.
Eaglesfan said it right....gotta man up....no finesse fishing.
As i like to say
If ya ain't got da skillz ta pay da billz...
Ya gonna git beat up from da feet up!
Happy fishing.

Fifty years ago at the big Indian Rocks Pier they used a swing chain on a 1/4 in. sisal rope with a hook that looked to be a 50-0. Tied one end to the pier with some slack and hooked a tire tube up to provide some give and pull.Baited it with a whole mullet and blue crab. They caught a 250+ pounder, beached him, drug him up on the pier and tied him behind a cushman 3 wheeler. We had to help push it off as the belt drive was slipping. Weighed him and then fillet and release. Not today. Painter

Back in the 60's, my Bro-In-Law, pulled one out from under a bridge in the keys with the boat winch, left the boat there and trailered the beast back to Miami to sell for .50 a lb. He made $300. Back in the 60's that was good money. Ahh....the good old days.

Use to be pics of huge JF at the Clearwater marina back in the 60's. The Buckeye & Buckeye II party boats ran trips back then. Any of you old-timers remember them? J-fish that were 500+ lbs were fairly common. Grouper pot winner on party boats back then was a min. 20-30 pounder. Go out on a charter w/ 5 others, get 400-500 lbs of grouper & snapper. Come home w/ 30-40 lbs of filets each. We just didn't know how fortunate we were back then, & I'm afraid this generation will look back at now, & say the same. How bad will it be then if now are " the good old days" ?
