Took the all day trip on the queenfleet. Me and Allison had high hopes of putting meat in the fridge. We brought fresh salted shrimp, and the leftover scraps from last weekends hubbards trip. Our goal was grunts.. And we knew we jumped on the best grunt wagon around.
First stop was about a 2 hr ride southwest. In about 65 ft of water we got parked.Water was so clean you could see bottom. We were using double dropper loops on 80 mono, 3/0 owner circle hooks. on 40 lb mamoi line. and 5 oz of lead. First drop and soon as you hit bottom its was carnage. Grunts grunts Big grunts. and tons of baby red grouper and huge puffers.
Everyone caught as much fish as they wanted. Allison got a solid 22 inch gag, released , i caught 3 firetrucks 24,28,29 inches. All given a kiss and sent to make more babies. We must have caught 40 or more lil red grouper and lots of small gags between the 2 of us.1 big bright orange toadfish, the biggest puffers i had ever seen.
Ohh and i also got a hogfish..about 21 inches. Most fish were caught on salted shrimp. 2 of my firetrucks came on grunt baited sizes of salted shrimp. 1 on a whole boston mack that was also salted. the hog came on shrimp set still on the bottom.
As the boat would roll i just let it sit still taking up the slack with my finger. i know i had a few more snapper bites but they are tricky .First time i tried for em and i got one.. So that feels good. All fish kept on the boat were grunts 1 porgy and 1 hog snapper. Someone in the back got a 10 lb gag. a few other firetrucks and keeper sized gags.
Weather was fantastick. 2 to 4 rollers.. got a bit choppy on the ride in. But nobody on the boat was seasick, and there were alot of first timers onboard.
I just finished cleaning up the fillets all boneless.. and i have 12 lbs of clean boneless meat fillets of grunt. According to the house scale. 46 pairs of fillets were bagged and 1 hog pair.
Now some pics.
we waited in line for 2 hrs to get fish cleaned.
What a fantastic trip this was! We filled 2 stringers
