Arrived, around 9:30 a.m., sloooow incoming all day, plenty of bait available, threads, sardines, pins. Also bought some frozen sand fleas at the baitshop...there has got to be a sheepshead somewhere out here, so says Glen Pla on his show!
Water was pretty clear, you could see the rockpiles like no one's business, a great time to take the walk and write down numbers. It's amazing, I used to be one of those fisher people...throwing into the "desert" between the rocks, wondering why I wasn't getting anything while to both sides people were bringing in fish!
So, anyway, proceed to fish with a knocker rig, trying sand fleas, which get picked clean immediately...cut bait, which brought up many mini gags and two in the upper teens in length. Also jigged for macks with a larger sabiki and the two drop deal I had made up...nuthin doin on the mack front....did get a break off on the smaller sabiki which may have been a mack. About noonish I did get a really nice hit, fight , more sideways back and forth fight than the head to the bottom grouper fight....and brought in a really nice keywest grunt...so into the cooler he went.
Breeze kept things a nice temp until about 2 when it really started to pick up and I left for the day.
Didn't really see any macks landed around me, guys next rockpile over did catch a mangrove snapper, wouldn't mind a few of those. 5 more days 'til grouper season opens!

Good report.
Its not often that you get clear enough water to really see the rock piles, but when you do it gives you a real perspective on where to fish for them Gags. You get to see how far out 300 yds really is. Most people are fishing in the 30-70 yd Flipper expressway lane.
Never had any luck with them convicts at the Skyway either. You just have to lucky enough to pick the right pilings.

Too Funny !! Glad to see that you have a healthy sense of humor, LOL ! OBviously , you've had your coffee...
Good report and lots of good information. With a single tide day , I am not surprised that the fishing was below average. Did you see any ladyfish caught ? (tarpon candy)
On the keywest grunt, did you get him on cut bait ? or live ?

havetofish: I wonder how they're planning to distribute the demolition debris, would think it would follow the same pattern.
dadflyer: Grunt was caught on a piece of cut greenback.
blacktip: I didn't think of the grunt as picture material, never entered my mind! Hopefully I'll be posting an opening day grouper pic or two!

The Request for Proposal includes this paragraph..
"All demolition material must be removed from the project site by the Design/Build Firm to an approved landfill area, permitted reef and/or other area that can accept the material. No material may be left on the bay bottom. "
This leads me to believe that none of it will be left there.

Interesting. When you look at the aerial pics of the rock piles, you can see many of them are either filled in or non existent on that east side, so they could easily be considered a place where the demo rubble could be placed.
