I was out at Playalinda Beach with the family this past Saturday and I took a surf rod along to keep me occupied.
Lovely day and all that but 3 things surprised me:
1. A guy right next to me pulled out a sheepshead the size of my wife's arse. I didn't know they were surf regulars?
2. I didn't catch crap.
3. A guy pulled out a beautiful 6 foot Lemon Shark and took it home. I was 95% sure in my head that they are a protected or whatever species in Florida,, but I wasn't 100% sure,, I couldn't get a signal on my smartphone to check,,,, and didn't want to make a dick out of myself. Of course now I find out he should have released it and I feel bad,, cos the guy was kinda a jerk anyway.
Hey,, I never said it was an interesting story.

I don't surf-fish much so I haven't invested a lot of $ in a rig. I have a cheap 13 foot Shoremaster rod and a nice big Jarvis Inegra spinning reel with 30 lb braid. I mostly just fish pomp rigs in the surf but occasionally like to load a 6oz sputnik fish-finder and blast a big bait our as far as I can to see what's out there.
I much prefer pier fishing,,, but lying around on a beach all day is not my style,, if I'm that close to water I HAVE to fish.

May i ask where is Playalinda beach? You may! Playalinda Beach is east of Titusville,, one of Florida's best beaches and most times it's very quiet,, sometimes deserted. At the south end of the beach you have Launch Pads 39/A & 39/B ,,, the shuttle Endeavor is currently on 39/A,,, it's an awesome sight. The beach extends a few miles north and there are numbered parking lots with restrooms right on the beach. Lots 1-3 seem to be most popular for surf fishing,, but you can throw a line in pretty much anywhere. Also there is a boat ramp for access to Edy creek & the Mosquito Lagoon at around lot 7 (I think). Anything north of lot #13 is basically a nudist beach,,, although illegal,,, a blind-eye is turned to it by the authorities,, which is fair enough I guess. Playalinda is within the Canaveral Seashores National Park so you have to pay to get in,,, but it's only $3 per adult,,, kids under 16 are free. To get to Playalinda, just take the Max Brewer highway from Titusville,,, can't miss it! The Beach is usually shut for 2 or 3 days before a shuttle launch,,,, check their website or give the Park a call before setting out: www.nps.gov/cana/index.htm

Playalinda Beach, is located on the Florida East Coast , about 12-15 miles North of the Space Center, Brevard, Florida. It is direct access to the Atlantic .
Juck ~ my opinion is that when pompano fishing in the surf , your rod ( as a 6 oz. and bait) and #30 pound test line is like going squirrell hunting with a howitzer cannon. Your rod isn't going to be able to detect bite .
Also , your braid line (#30 pound test) is about 1/3 the thickness of mono; on the Fla. west coast many people fish with #8 - #15 braid for pompano bite detection with braid .
It seems to me that you are geared for the Gulf pier even when fishing in the ocean surf . It requires a different "mind-set" : think light action , light line, and light bite detection. Also , depending on the beach (high impact / low impact), wave and wind conditions , a 6oz. sputnick isn't needed. If you have a spare spool and you went with a lighter line , chances are you would get better distance with a 3 oz. sputnick . JMHO
Dadflyer PS : Sheepshead in the surf ? That would indicate to me that crabs ,or sand fleas were in the surf mix. Was there a "slough" near to the shore ?

Aye,, there are tons of sand fleas,,, though they move around a lot during the day,, I've never been much good at finding them but occasionally I get lucky.
