Here's proof, they're coming down. Just a dam shame. Hope they at least create reefs there w/ the debris

Thanks for posting.
So how long does any one think it'll take to get the whole east side span removed?

Thanks for the posting of information about the demolition.
I only wish that they could use some of the debris to strengthen , or protect the existing pier, and possibly extend its life expectancy. With the loss of the Gandy Fishing bridge , the remaining western pier is all that much more valuable as a resource . An additional reef would definitely be an asset .
I wonder how demolition will affect the April fishery for spanish mackeral and kingfish , in addition to the native reef and migratory species ? (noise / explosives/ sediment/etc..) ?

the demo would be done in sections, not all at once. also, i would think that they will be working on it monday thru fridays. not too many companies that contract for the dot are working weekends unless there is a time limit on the project. there will still be plenty of spots where the demo will not effect the fishing. if granite construction gets awarded this project, they will do a very good job. they have been in business for a long time and they specialize in bridge construction.

I'm not a professional in this context so I could be off on this speculation, but I can't help but to wonder if this demolition may have some effect on the structural integrity on current working pier.

the pier is built in such a way that it would not be effected if they do any de-construction to the east span. think of it as 2 rows of fold out tables in a cafeteria. all of the weight is on the legs, not each deck surface. if one table is removed, it does not effect the rest of the tables.
besides, it is a state project. dot contracts have written that any property (not in the contracted area of work) that is damaged shall be repaired by the contractor. this includes demolition.
i would guess that it would take nearly a year to complete the entire project. i will search the fdot's website and check.

Anyone know if these construction activities will be available online anywhere? I don't want to drive 2 hours and find the pier closed or something when I get there.

Too bad they don't mention where they will dump the debris. They should leave it right there, especially for the NSP, since there is no structure on the east side of the piers. It would start a great habitat for some incoming tide grouper/snapper fishing.
BigMike, if you have the chance for any input, I think this would double your NSP attendance. I know I would fish it more.
For us Grouper Diggers, access to the east rock piles on the SSP is a welcome addition. Its tough to try when the only time you want to be there is on the outgoing tide.

Nice find Tommy.
I see that it was posted in 2009. Someone must have dug up an old video.

There were a couple from that time span, one filmed with 8mm B/W in the side panel.
